The barbel police,
Who are they, and do they really exist? Are they people who care about what is happening on our rivers, or are they just someone who gets in the way of the catch all at any cost brigade?
Are some of us losing site of what river fishing is about? And are we becoming obsessed with big catches and catching the next double figure record barbel?
There are lads on this forum who have caught some really big chub and barbel, but it is not this kind of angler I would accuse of any wrong doing, e.g. catch all at any cost. These lads have put the time and effort in and deserve the success that they have made for them selves. You only have to read their articles to see that these are the kind of angler we would all like to be.

The kind of angler I would suspect the barbel police are having a go at are the failed carp angler type, who come on to the rivers with their two rods, boilies, and bolt rigs, and want to know where the biggies are straight away. And they have no knowledge of river craft what so ever.
In this recent hot weather, the rivers are at a low state, so would it be right to fish for the likes of barbel in these conditions? (low oxygen) If some one came up to you in these conditions and pointed this out to you, would you think he could have a point or would you immediately label him as part of the barbel police force?

Could someone give me a deffinition of the barbel police please?

Dont know about Barbel Police, but, what about this situation, I was walking an area of the upper River Rother in East Sussex today and I was approached be this fellow whom propmtly told me that it was no use looking at that swim as it is mine I said so you are a Member then to which he said No but I have been looking at this stretch since the end of last season and had been baiting it I informed him that He has no right to be on this stretch of the river to which he said and who's going to stop me,needless to say I reported this to the Club what action they will take as this is one of our remote outpost, let you know if I hear(sic) anything.

Mel,
I think the barbel police is a bit of a joke thing, in that they are people who think they know more than anyone else on the subject.

I have only ever met one person who could be defined as a barbel cop. He was a weird looking character with a decrepid split can rod, a Barbour jacket and an old centrepin reel.

This was on the Trent some years ago.

Personally I feel that these people are being over played.

Forget them. Yes Baz, it is a bit of a joke.

I have to agree its all a bit tounge in cheek. Anybody that complains about a methoed of angling is given this name.
Myself i dont see any methord as being the correct way. Just so long as the fish or river is damaged and you enjoy yourself then fish however yo wish.

Hello Bryan,
But we are now being told that it is not right to fish in certain conditions. Allready I have heard people say that a closed season would be better in the middle of a heatwave with low water levels.
What I am saying is should these people be classed as the barbel police, (the know all brigade) or are they caring anglers talking sense?

It was Dave Slater (what has happened to Dave recently? Is he ill again?) who said about closing the river when the water level is low. He didn't mean every river, just those affected and it was only his opinion.

Barbel Police as such are a pure figment of Graham Marsden's imagination. Form his descriptions they are anglers who stalk the banks looking for anyone not using "traditional" methods. Whether that buzzers, carp rods, rod pods, hit and hold poles with 16 elastic, isotopes on the ends of feeder rods or nylon line (incl. braids).

To be a real "traddy" you have to use the cane, star back reel, silk line, gut bottoms, porcupine quill floats, wear floppy hat, checked shirt and a tie, grow facial hair and stink like a horse's ass.

Couldn't give a toss about "them". So long as people stick to the rules and care for the fish, then frankly I do not care how anyone fishes.

Some people like red wine, some white, some like lager, some bitter, some like football, some rugby......etc

Who cares !?!?!

that's the problem though stuart the barbel police don't think that way, they think you should do it their way or not at all.

The "Barbell Police" are just as real as the Carp/Pike/etc etc police.Just the modern day version of the old "Ultra Cult" carp angler. All have the same thing in common, none of them can impress with what they catch so they don this cloak of elitism to be better than all of us!They usualy choose a specialist and some times obscure field to "Police" Nothing to do with traditional values or up holding them.Just an excersise in self elevation.

They can think all they want Jason. I learnt a long time ago just to get on with my thing and not worry about what others think. So long as people dont physically intefere with me doing what I want, I just dont care what they think.
