Hello

I'm thinking of getting a subscription to one of the coarse fishing magazines. The problem is, that no shops in Denmark have them, so I have no idea which is best for me. I do have some old IYCF and they're pretty good except for alot of UK waters reviewed, which are totally irrelevant to me.

So could someone please tell the difference between: IYCF and Coarse Angling Today or recommend other titles.

cheers, Rasmus

I think you'll learn more from forums and websites mate.

I've had various subscriptions over the years including IYCF and I always cancel and end up selling them on. Most of the info. is geared round carp these days and as you've said, it's all venues you'll never use. The adverts also fill up too much space for my liking.

I've been using forums for over 10 years mate and barring a name-change, which explains my join date, I still come back to the same ones for good reason.

Ask other anglers and not some columnist/article writer who has a sponsorship deal to fulfil.

Rasmus-- dont know about the two titles you mention as I havent bought them as I think they fail on several differant levels-- But-- if you want a pretty reasonable read that wont set you back loads of cash, tries to engage anglers of all abilities and persuasions then try the "Angling Star" that is ( I think) published by the Sheffield Newspapers - owned by Johnstone Publishing.

The week that I joined and have been using this forum - about two weeks ago - I had bought three fishing mags, and have still only flicked through them! Nuff said ;)

Cheers, Nick :)

Nick, you must have paid close on to a tenner for the three? If I had spent all that I would have taken the print off by now and at a guess I reckon I would still be asking for a refund!!!

pretty conclusive

Ok - thanks. I guess people here are not very fond of these magazines. Maybe you're right - the money would be better spend on buying the missing books in my collection of Chris Yates (or maybe a subscription to Waterlog Magazine?!).

You ain't wrong there!!! That's is exactly why this forum is so much better. Excellent information, instant answers, a good bunch of like minded 'sensible' people ;) and no adverts!

Cheers, Nick :)

Coarse Angling Today, probably the best there is.
If Carlsberg was to publish a fishing magazine...
but as they don't you'll have to make do with Kev Clifford ;)

CAT is certainly for the more advanced angler unlike Total Coarse Fishing and IYCF which are both aimed at beginners. The other good thing about CAT is that although some anglers are sponsored it doesn't come across as advertorials in the same way. I enjoy reading it (and writing for it).

we enjoy your articals too!! I found your roach artical particularly inspiring. I've started my roach campaign and have been getting amounst the smaller fish. As always, location has been the biggest part of my fishing (2/3 s of my time is spent looking for fish when dog walking). There are bigger to be caught. I am onto a shoal of larger roach - but these have alluded me so far.

Keep it up Mark.

I would say that pike lines is a very good magazine but it is only quarterly and you might have to join the PAC to get it.Oh and it is only about pike with a few other species every now and again.

Does anyone on forums ever read the question that's being asked?

Rasmus asked:

1. Which coarse fishing magazine is best for me?

2. What is the difference between IYCF and Coarse Angling Today?

3. Can you recommend any other titles?

Answers like they're all rubbish, get a book, buy a laptop, etc, etc, don't exactly answer his questions, do they?

Rasmus, to answer question one we need to know more about your level of experience, what types of fishing you prefer, what fish you specifically wish to target, what sort of waters are available to you and are you intending fishing rivers, natural stillwaters or heavily stocked commercial-type fisheries.

In answer to Q2 IYCF addresses the needs of the beginner to intermediate angler who is keen to learn from anglers who are open about the waters they fish, the tactics they use and the baits that work for them. CAT is aimed at the more advanced angler who is specifically targeting bigger than average fish but doesn't want to tell you where he's fishing. It is certainly not advertorial free!

To answer Q3 usefully I refer you back to Q1. There is no point in listing the publications I like to read if they don't lie with your ambitions. For instance there's no point whatsoever in me citing Pike & Predators or Advanced Carp Fishing if your favourite way of fishing is with a pole...

I hope this actually helps you.

Yes Bob, I do know the asked question, but CAT is so far ahead of the rest I thought it worth plugging. As Mark has already said, no blatant advertising within the articles, You know, like all contributors do pushing products in the other magazines.

Well, If we're into pushing group magazines :D the CSG quarterly magazine 'Chevin' is really, really, really good - if you're into chub fishing ;) AND not a single advert or product promotion.

Hello Bob

I'm a bit of an allrounder who just enjoys reading. Saltwater, trout, flyfishing, spin and predators are well covered in the danish magazines, but coarse angling are almost absent, due to the fact that probably around 1 percent of anglers are into this type of fishing.

I consider myself an average angler (been fishing for 25 years). I fish natural stillwaters for bream, carp, tench, roach and perch. Float and ledgering, but no electronics or bivvies.

CAT sounds interesting - maybe I could somehow get a single copy and judge for myself.

Calm down, I think we're just trying to save the bloke from making the same mistakes we have. Nothing wrong with that is there?

Andrew is right!

Improve your course fishing, great for the beginner, younger anglers. An occasional buy if there is an inspiraional artical (which there often is!)

Course Angling Today, more specialist - good ideas for thinking anglers.

Pike and Predators - An occasional buy to inspire my quest for a twenty pound pike.

The problem with subscribing on the strength of a single issue, is that often a copie will be delivered that fails to interest!

My preference these days is to save my money and buy a fishing book. It amazes me the quality of writing apparent today - I have recently purchased 'Chevin' by the the chub study group (awesome book, beautifully produced, written and stunning photos) and Derrick Amies Pike fishing on the Norfolk broads (contreversial, informative and opinionated). These reflect my personal interests

Magazines are great occasional buys, if I lived abroad I would have to choose CAT........ If you PM me your address I would be more than happy to send on copies of old (month old) issues of magazines...

This reminds me of the old Harry Enfield character, "You don't wanna buy that...!"

Rasmus asks, 'What magazine is best for ME'

On that basis we now know he doesn't bivvy or use bite alarms, and that he decribes himself as 'average', enjoys a bit of basic float fishing and legering on stillwaters, IYCF is probably the only magazine that remotely suits his needs, possibly followed by Total Coarse Fishing.

I'd suggest to everyone else that whilst THEY may enjoy Coarse Angling Today it is a magazine dedicated to the specialist angler rather than the average angler. After eliminating all chub and barbel articles from the magazine, foreign adventures, pike, zander and any kind of fishing involving the use of bite alarms, what is there left to appeal to Rasmus?

Not a lot actually...
