Tackle Box, Kings Lynn. Nice shop, top bloke. Benwick Sports is a good pikers shop midweek, but you do feel a bit pushed out at the weekend by match anglers, is that because they spend more money? First place goes to The Tackle Box in Gainsborough. Nevs shop. Ordered some rods from them, great service, ordered some frozen bait from them, even better service.

Has to be John Ross Tackle shop in Hoddesdon, Herts. Not a huge shop but it's full to the brim with all the good quality stuff you 'really need'. The team in the shop really know their products etc and have good knowledge of the local waters.
I Live in Cheshunt which is 5-6 miles away. There are 3 shops closer to me, the over priced Simpsons of Turnford included, none of which compete...
Hats off to them. They've been very helpful in the past, advice which has lead me to get better results on many occasions!

Mark II ,s in crayford, north kent.
Great guys, cover all aspects of angling, large bait selection with orders taken.Same goes for tackle.Always willing to help with addvice and plenty of fishery booklets/flyers.Also when i have been unable to get to the shop,my wife will go for me,even though she hasnt a clue what im on about, she tells the chaps and always comes back with the right bit of kit.
Im not in there every other day spending hours chatting and getting too friendly ,so cant comment on the quality of their tea or coffee making abilities.

PS.

Some local shops in the SE london/north kent area seem to be very stand offish, not very helpfull.Have a limited amount of tackle ,mainley carp gear. Also take orders ,cash cheques then wait for you to turn up for your order.Only to say they couldnt get it,after a month of waiting.
Also some shops have poor quality maggots worm etc.Ive even been ignored when waiting to pay for my purchase and left standing around whilst they talk about carp and cars.
So a big thank you to mark II,s

my vote goes to my local shop: 'The Creel', formally 'Colin's Creel' in Raunds, northants. It was going to be closed down and would have made life difficult for not only me but other local anglers, but the old chaps son came to the rescue and has had it all re decorated, new stock bought in and old stock cleared out very very cheap which is great for youngsters and people strapped for cash. they always go out of their way to help, he even got out of bed on a sunday morning to open up when they were closed for my dad who was looking forward to one of his few fishing trips. he even gives his mobile number to people for out of hours service. he is an angler himself so he understands the needs for the local anglers and is always able to give advice and discounts. he even sold me his own baitdropper when they were decorating because he couldn't find their stock of them!

a big thank you steve if you are reading this

I vote for Ted Carters in Preston. Not my local shop, and I don't go in that often, but a very well stocked shop (apart from Carbon Specimen hooks, eh Barney?), all the major tackle & bait manufacturers, plenty staff to assist if needed.
Being central to some prime game fishing waters (Ribble/Hodder/Lune & also Cumbrian rivers) they have a large section of the shop devoted to game anglers. They certainly have the best selection of angling clothing that I have seen, obviously the salmon anglers are quite discerning when it comes to their attire, I just wish I could afford some of the stuff.
They have also recently extended their premises into next door, giving a much larger display area for carp/specialist tackle. Car parking right outside the front door too.

I’m with Wendy on this one, Guilders of Failsworth.
It’s been open since 1969
It’s a family run business.
Jimmy was the founder with his wife Beryl and the shop is now run by Gerry and Pam daughter of Jimmy.
Over the time I’ve been going in it (since it opened), never have I had cause for complaint. If a product has been defective its been changed no quibble. If I’ve needed a specialist piece of kit they have gone out of their way to track it down for me. The bait is always first class, as is the advice. Gerry is a very good all-round angler, who’s out there fishing two days a week.
On many occasions I’ve watched various members of the family explain, demonstrate, etc., to novices and young anglers alike, how to use, make up, tie and anything else you can think of that a tackle dealer should do, do.

Oh! and by the way, Pam is one of the best rod repairs I’ve ever come across, She’s even better than me!!!

Unquestionably, Guilders is for me, the best all round angling shop in the land.

I've got a few tackle shops local to me. One of these is the fairly well known WMAC - West Midlands Angling Centre. However, Allen's of Leamore in Bloxwich pip them to the post for service. They are very helpful - they recently got a Shimano tele Catana in for me just to have a look at even though I told them that I had no intention of buying one, I just wanted to hold one to find out how it handled. No problem they understood and got one in anyway.

Kevan

ps. the worst tackle shop has to be Wickford's down London way. I can't say why or I may end up in court. Let's just say I have had problems with their mail order service and it looks like I may end up out of pocket because of their mistake.

Swale Angling Centre, Sheffield.

I was having real problems trying to find some spools for an ABU Suveran S4000M reel. The UK distributors never even replied to my emails, four other ABU dealers made efforts but failed. Swale kept on at the distributors with weekly phone calls and eventually got me 3 spools at 14 quid each.

Swale are a family-run shop and they are my first port of call for mail order purchases.

1. Swale Angling Centre
2. Hinders of Swindon
3. Leslies of Luton

I would like to nominate West Midlands Angling Center.
In June I bought a new telescopic 3m landing net handle from WMAC. On one of my regular trips to the Trent at Burton it splintered and broke under the weight of a six pound barbel. I took the handle back to the shop expecting a straight exchange for the same type of handle. They not only gave me a new handle they gave me a 3.4m twin top T/A power handle at no extra cost to me. Is that service or what?

I'd like to nominate Cotswold Angling in Swindon.
It doesn't do mail order, it doesn't have dozens of poles and rods lined up all over the place! And it doesn't have every Shimano reel you could imagine.
What it does have is three guys who would bend over backwards to help you with anything, and they don't always recommend the most expensive kit! And the advice they give you is based on solid experience.

What it reminds me of is the old fashioned type of tackle shop that you can go into for a pint of maggots and stay and chat for hours!!

Definitely my choice!

Oi, Barney, I'm still here, y'know!

I think your mate Steve is a very discerning chap. We're thinking of going on the Ribble on Thursday and I'm going to catch some chub on some of them hooks, just to irritate you!

I would have to say that K.C Angling in sutton cos hes always got what i want, He gives me advice because it doesn't matter where i fish he has been there and he knows all the best tactics. He doesn't try to get as much money out of you as he can.I went in there one day before a much because i had broken my pole and it was just before closing time. He took it home with him and dropped it off to my house early in the morning and didn't even charge me for it. He just said that he likes to look after kids.

I have to nominate Angling Centre Derby. I came back to fishing last year after a 15 year absence and really needed advice on what tackle was out there and what had changed. Their advice was excellent, they didn't give me the "everyone goes carp fishing nowadays" which I got from one local shop or "you can't fish for roach without having at least one pole" which I got from another. They steered me away from expensive mistakes and the bait is by far the best in the locality. Without their help I might not have bothered doing more than a couple of sessions in the height of summer but now I'm as enthusiastic about fishing as I was when I was 10.
