Emap have a new survey once again it is mainly aimed at the carp boys. Why do they bother.

I sent them this email afterwards.

I have just completed your survey and once again it is very biased towards carp fishing. You also ask what I would class myself as. With only 3 options I do not really fit in any of these as I would class myself as a all round angler not carp, Pleasure or Match. You have also missed of Coarse Fisherman along with Coarse angler which I class as 2 of the best magazines out there.

Please try harder next time or as I suspect this is just aimed at pulling in more advertising revenue than adjusting the titles under the emap banner to better encompass the different types of angler.

Bryan this is a typical commercial survey, probably organised by the companies that advertise in AT and other Emap publications.

It is not aimed at the likes of you or me.

It is mainly aimed at the Joe Soaps of the angling world, just as similar surveys are aimed at the high handicap hackers of the golf world.

Remember Emap has to make a profit, and the people who really contribute to that profit are the Joe Soaps.

I like that, Brian. "I live in Hope" - but if you want a new job go to Jeopardy!

But ask yourself one question. How many barbel magazines are on the newstands? And how many carp ones? (drat, that's two!).

You're right in that not even listing CF and CAT demonstrates sloppy research.

Er, Joe Soap here. Why is Ron always picking on me with his holier-than thou attitude? I am a pleasure/match/carp angler and cant see what everyone is moaning about.

It doesn't Mark, the findings of this will be presented to advertisers as part of the sales story.

EMAP titles have presumably noticed the explosion in carp fishing magazines, which I also guess has diluted advertising spend.

They want people to buy into advertising with them.

50% of our readers go carp fishing and 20% of them are going to buy new rods this year.

That's 6,000 people who are in the market for a new rod etc etc.

This is how most media have to sell themselves these days, with more and more advertisers migrating online.

Just thinking about what John said though. With the exception of the specialist predator, sea and game magazines, has there ever been an edition of a coarse angling magazine that hasn't had an article on Carp or Barbel? Can't think of one!

I don't mind the odd Carp and Barbel article. The problem is its all we see. Stillwaters article means carp and rivers mean barbel. The only time you see the other species is when it close to spawning time and there after the big girls. Most of the articles just keep repeating themselfs wih the only diffrence being the bait they used. This is usually Brilliant baits latest boillie or pellet.

Good idea mate i might just do the same on bleak and ruffe.
Reckon Bryan has a point though and i also think some writers must have a large back catalogue of their old articles stuck in My Documents and every so often will shove one they had printed 2years ago into print.
The barbel in my opinion has become The Lord of the Manor even though i like catching the fish myself.Lets give the dace and grayling a bit of coverage for a change.
The carp are now like inflated Sumo wrestlers pumped up on high protein baits and apart from crucians i dont care if i never catch one again
There is one thing worst though and thats a diagram of Bob Nudds pole rig for FIs
