I wonder if we just follow a trend with this two rod thing? I've done it, never felt comfy. I've seen it done well on certain big river stretches, I've seen it done appalingly. What success I've had with barbel has been on one rod at the right time and place, often on the bigger rivers. Certainly I've enjoyed it more, fished better and felt the freedom to move when I want. There's a great feeling about 'settling in' to your last, or 'banker', swim when you roved for a period beforehand.
