This has worked well elsewhere so I thought I'd post it here. A single thread for all the stuff you see on Ebay (generally fishing stuff but doesn't have to be) for what you consider to be a daft price. It can roll on indefinitely.

I'll kick off with this, note the very appropriate sellers name!:D

How about this? I know that they are supposed to be very good but that price is just crazy.

I like how in the £3,000,000 one they still want to charge you £2.50p P&P now that's cheeky <grins>

If that Carbotec rod was one of a pair - I'd pay up to £800 if they were in good condition.

If i see the words 'rare', vintage' or 'scarce' - I have to stop myself laughing when applied to some of the junk that really should have not been salvaged from the dump..........

And why is it that every one once owned a cane rod that they wish they still had 'cos it would be worth 'thousands' if they 'ad it now.......

check this out - most expensive 'bean poles' in the garden centre LARGE COLLECTION OF OVER 150 VINTAGE FISHING RODS | eBay

perfect example of the misuse of terms - 'scarce', rare etc

The Carbotec is overpriced at that money.

I have the Number 3 float rod and the Number 3 feeder rod that were around 400 pound each when new.

Mind you, the extra tips for the feeder rod were 32 quid a-piece if I remember rightly.

But then, they are truly lovely rods to play with . . . . . . . . and if compared to a Sage Z-Axis for example it represents good value for money.

Some would disagree though . . . . .

why oh why are folk still buying from ebay anyway?
MOST of the stuff on there is rubbish and fake. I had an account when sold off some of my gear a few years ago and had nothing but trouble with buyers, and some folk I know who have bought stuff have been done big time! the site is best left alone, trust me!

Really? I think the old adage of buyer beware is certainly applicable, but it is still possible to pick up some decent stuff at good prices. Examples I have had include:

Hardy Wanless 7' for 6lb line listed as repaired due to different colour whipping on butt ring. Knowing this to be the original copper binding, I bid and won it for a shade under £50 including carriage. It was mint, with bag and stopper. I sold it some time later for £80.

Cane carp rod. Photo (only one) was lousy and blurred, but it showed enough to suggest it was worth a punt. £27 later I had a perfectly good MkIV built on J.B.Walker kit. I refurbed it with original jasper elephant brand silk and sold it for a ton.

Named MkIV. I won't give details, but it cost me £40 and proved to be a very well finished rod made on a Southwell blank by a locally significant angler. I had it professionally restored (for a very good price) by Paul Cook, and it remains with me.

Drennan 13' IM6 Waggler with original bag and tube. £70-odd all-in. Rod was apparently unused, in showroom condition.

Hardy Phantom hollow-built fly rod, circa 1965. Cost just over a ton but was happy to chance it as seller was local and I could collect and inspect it. Rod was (is) near mint. Similar rods occasionally come up for sale, usually for upwards of £200.

By way of balance, I have had three crocks; a broken glass B&W Avon Perfection which the seller refused to accept responsiility for; I only paid £20 for it so I fixed it as best I could and sold it for £15. Net loss a fiver plus half an hour with a hacksaw, whipping thread and glue. Second was a Hardy Matchmaker which proved to be made up of parts from at least two different rods, and had a very slack joint as a result. I contacted the seller, who agreed to take it back, and the money was refunded. Net loss to me about a tenner for postage. Third was an Alex Martin fly rod which turned out to be completely rotten and delaminated. I paid £9 plus a fiver postage, so couldn't be bothered to send it back.

All in, I guess I'm pretty well up on the whole business. You just have to know what you're looking at, ask the right questions, and ultimately take a chance. If you don't fancy that, stay away, but then you'll never come across any real gems either.

hi fred,
I do get your drift, I just don't like to see anybody get ripped off that's all. I have allways tried to be honest but I have dealt with some real scum on that site!

A fair selection of my current gear was acquired from e-bay and I've also sold a lot of stuff for well over what I thought it was worth.Without doubt there are some scallies on there and you do need to take care over who you buy from but generally I've had no problems at all.

One guy took 3 months and a couple of stern e-mails before the rod I had off him turned up but everything else has been fine. No duff gear either but then I'm usually looking for something very specific and I will pay a little more if I like the sound of one buyer better than others.

Still amazes me what some people are prepared to pay. I recently sold a reel that I got second hand for what I know you could get a brand new one for if you did but spend a few minutes looking. Very odd.

Yes - there are some dubious characters on there, but a bit of diligent checking should show up the untrustworthy ones. There's always an element of risk though, and as I said before, if you really don't want to take a chance, ebay is possibly not for you. I am content to take the balance of probability, accept the odd turkey and take advantage of some good deals along the way. There are some little tricks to finding the really good listings, which I shall not divulge here! Instead, I'll give another example of underhand dealing.

A friend recently bought a Drennan rod which was described as excellent; on arrival it turned out to be a couple of inches short at the tip, with a replacement tip ring fitted, minus the whipping beneath that it should have had. He contacted the seller, explained the problem and the chap apologised for not noticing the fault and agreed to take it back and refund the money. However, before my friend had even sent the rod back, the listing had re-appeared, exactly as before. Besides the fact that the seller was clearly misrepresenting the item (he had no excuse this time for not being aware the rod was short second time around) he didn't even have the rod in his possession to sell. Suppose my friend had decided to keep it, or it had got damaged in transit?

There are some absolute gems on ebay if you dig a little to find them. For example search 'Heather the Leather' or any species along with the word 'art' and you'll see some of my drawings, prints of which are a total bargain considering the work i put in.

Yeah i know i may get modded here for blatant advertising but its worth doing to highlight the fact not all ebay sellers are dodgy when it comes to fishing stuff.

I have done more than 600 deals on ebay as a buyer and a seller, only ever one problem.
In the early days a guy from Liverpool said the article hadn't reached him.

I've never had since an article "lost" or "damaged" in the post.

I steer clear of blokes from Liverpool though :wh

Buy one of these for 1 pence..... buy it now and pay straight away....forget about the goods do this 10 times to boost you feedback up by 10 for 10 pence:D

I bought 1 the other day just to see if the fool actualy posts it to the UK having taken just 1 pence for it:D....don't think even would have the nerve to post a negative feedback if he don't

hi,
here is a little example of the people I dealt with on ebay,
A couple who turned out to be the management team at dolce and gobana in nightsbridge in london (so they said!) bought my shimano specialist 12ft (yes I know, but I needed the money) when I first started on ebay. I sent the rod in its own tube and wrapped it in bubble wrap, but when they received the rod they sent an email stating that 4inch of the but section had snapped clean off! They pestered me nearly every day for a refund and the emails where getting quite nasty! I asked a chap at work about what to do and he said that they should send you a photo as proof, and anyway they can claim from the post office. I asked for the proof and you know what, I never heard a ****y ever again....funny that!
