A most unsuitable rod...

Today I managed to talk myself into a Abu Enticer 10’ match as a spinning rod. I don’t need to throw a lure too far so that helps. Its got an awful lot of eyes/rings so a thin line is called for so many fish/lures will be lost. It fits sideways into a Peugeot107 boot and the wife might never discover it.

This happy event only came about as I have been catching small perch on two very different rods : a Mach1 specialist [Shakespeare] and a Challenge pro Spin 212 [Mitchell]. The latter cost £6 and got me back into fishing but how ‘dead’ it feels playing a fish. The former, totally unsuitable, feels like there is something alive on the end of the line.

This is no reflection on the different manufacturers. Just spend £20 -£30 on yer budget rod otherwise you might wonder what we is all getting excited about.

Talking to myself here but that's not unusual:) My point was you need to spend a little more than the cheapest to get something that feels good when yer into a fish. This morning I took my new 'Spinning' rod for a free-lining session rather than the Mach 1 Specialist with its screw-in quiver. The tip was sensitive enough to get the same strike rate but though nice to play,I was amazed that the Mach1 Specialist actually feels better playing small fish! I expected to find the ABU Match more suited to small fish. Well you would wouldn't you?

No I would not, it is more of a margin rod than a river rod and is designed for heavier fish. If you want a really cheap but good good spinning rod I would look to the ABU Diamond range of spinning rods.

I bought a light spinning rod from the local Decathlon a couple of years back..it's an absolute delight and my default rod when perching on the canals. cost...£23. (that's fishing for perch....not doing a budgie impersonation on the bank-side.....well.....!!)

No...its the one that distracts the pike..allowing the more talented angler to then catch the better fish....proper bream not the bits the riff-raff concentrate on!!!

It's also very good at attracting the attention of wholesome lady oars-persons!
