I do hope that FM doesn't go the way of so many other sites, where using aliases to launch personal attacks on people becomes the order of the day. But I think not.
I certainly don't feel the need to justify myself in any way, shape or form, but having slept on it, and considered it, as the mail has been posted on a public forum, I do at least have the right to reply. If only to defend myself.
It's a real pity that I wasn't fishing the Trent, because then the Dove Baliff could have called himself the Trent Baliff. Or TB for short.
Because ultimately that's what people like this are. They are illnesses that, if not dealt with, will attack and destroy a healthy body.
I do have a very good idea who the person is. And as with most postings of this sort, it's really nothing to do with the Dove, or even indeed fishing.
The hidden agenda or underlying trend is what it's all about. But if the Dove Baliff would like to come and sit on my couch (just think of it as a bed chair) I'd be happy to help him with his psychological problems. Don't be put off by the term 'shrink', just think of it in terms of tubing used for rigs.
But, the accusations:
a) THE SAME FISH. As one who meticulously documents statistics relating to his fish, I can accurately say that this is not true.
I have caught 6 Dove doubles and can verify that they are all different fish.
b) SAME SWIM. The six fish have not come from the same spot. In fact on my last 2 visits, I have had 3 doubles. And on each trip the only person I bumped into was an old eccentric lady dog walker.
So how does the Dove Baliff know that I'm fishing the same spot? Maybe watching me from afar with binoculars? If he got closer, he would see more clearly.
c) TRYING TO CLAIM FAME. I'm certainly not after fame, far from it. I enjoy writing about angling, and I'm always totally honest. Read through PP and you'll see that I'm as much liklely to write about my blanks, or run of the mill fish, as I am about the odd real specimen I catch.
d) SPENDING THREE DAYS A WEEK IN THE SAME SWIM. The most I have done on the Dove was 2 consecutive nights. And I only did that once. (And that wasn't in a bivvie)
My records show that this season I've fished the Dove 15 times.(Bear in mind I fish 3 times a week, and it's hardly as if I'm camped out on the banks, as suggested) 8 were sessions where I perhaps fished into darkness but went home before it got too late.
I fished another 6 sessions where I fished throughout the night. But even a look at my records show that mostly I arrived late afternoon and went home early next morning (to catch up on my sleep). In total time it was less than the angler who fishes first light until it gets dark.
In next week's PP you'll read about two fish - both doubles+. I fished between 1.00 pm and 6.30 pm. A short session really. So it's not correct to try and give people the impression that I'm spending vast amounts of time at the water's edge, and that's why I'm catching fish.
This is not the first time I've been attacked with wild accusations on forums. I suppose it gives Des Taylor a break though. But I have decided that I'm going to withdraw from posting on such forums from now on. So no matter what is said about me from now on, it will not invoke a response whatsover. Silence is golden, as they say.
As I play my cards close to my chest anyway, and as I hardly see a soul when I'm on the Dove, I'm not sure where information is gleaned from. Anyway, as I've already said, it's not actually to do with fishing.
I shall continue to answer any personal mails that I receive, as I always have done. And as long as Graham wants me to write PP each week, I'm happy to oblige.
I'm not angry, annoyed or anything like that. In fact I genuinely feel for Dove Baliff and hope he can deal with this part of his character.
