so it looks like the Dove Bailiff is an 'off-peak' type of guy..oh well.....

and I have a great story about a nice big chunky Dove Barbel that puts all of Sedges'current' fish in the shade....for now

took me five years to land this one, though I had plenty of 9's along the way....I hope everyone enjoys the story, it was special to me, and the first guys I texted, Graham, Rik, Coops, Mike F and Brummie ,I hope were as chuffed as me. Lets not forget, the best bit of fishing is sharing that success with your mates, whoever they may be, so lets enjoy those barbel...esp the ones from the Dove that I catch.....and as a final thought, just remember, we are not all the same, but all those guys who fish with me, who lets you have the first trot through the hot peg?......thats what its all about ...sharing....apart from peg *@ that is....thats mine...for now...tight lines fellas!

I do hope that FM doesn't go the way of so many other sites, where using aliases to launch personal attacks on people becomes the order of the day. But I think not.

I certainly don't feel the need to justify myself in any way, shape or form, but having slept on it, and considered it, as the mail has been posted on a public forum, I do at least have the right to reply. If only to defend myself.

It's a real pity that I wasn't fishing the Trent, because then the Dove Baliff could have called himself the Trent Baliff. Or TB for short.

Because ultimately that's what people like this are. They are illnesses that, if not dealt with, will attack and destroy a healthy body.

I do have a very good idea who the person is. And as with most postings of this sort, it's really nothing to do with the Dove, or even indeed fishing.

The hidden agenda or underlying trend is what it's all about. But if the Dove Baliff would like to come and sit on my couch (just think of it as a bed chair) I'd be happy to help him with his psychological problems. Don't be put off by the term 'shrink', just think of it in terms of tubing used for rigs.

But, the accusations:

a) THE SAME FISH. As one who meticulously documents statistics relating to his fish, I can accurately say that this is not true.

I have caught 6 Dove doubles and can verify that they are all different fish.

b) SAME SWIM. The six fish have not come from the same spot. In fact on my last 2 visits, I have had 3 doubles. And on each trip the only person I bumped into was an old eccentric lady dog walker.

So how does the Dove Baliff know that I'm fishing the same spot? Maybe watching me from afar with binoculars? If he got closer, he would see more clearly.

c) TRYING TO CLAIM FAME. I'm certainly not after fame, far from it. I enjoy writing about angling, and I'm always totally honest. Read through PP and you'll see that I'm as much liklely to write about my blanks, or run of the mill fish, as I am about the odd real specimen I catch.

d) SPENDING THREE DAYS A WEEK IN THE SAME SWIM. The most I have done on the Dove was 2 consecutive nights. And I only did that once. (And that wasn't in a bivvie)

My records show that this season I've fished the Dove 15 times.(Bear in mind I fish 3 times a week, and it's hardly as if I'm camped out on the banks, as suggested) 8 were sessions where I perhaps fished into darkness but went home before it got too late.

I fished another 6 sessions where I fished throughout the night. But even a look at my records show that mostly I arrived late afternoon and went home early next morning (to catch up on my sleep). In total time it was less than the angler who fishes first light until it gets dark.

In next week's PP you'll read about two fish - both doubles+. I fished between 1.00 pm and 6.30 pm. A short session really. So it's not correct to try and give people the impression that I'm spending vast amounts of time at the water's edge, and that's why I'm catching fish.

This is not the first time I've been attacked with wild accusations on forums. I suppose it gives Des Taylor a break though. But I have decided that I'm going to withdraw from posting on such forums from now on. So no matter what is said about me from now on, it will not invoke a response whatsover. Silence is golden, as they say.

As I play my cards close to my chest anyway, and as I hardly see a soul when I'm on the Dove, I'm not sure where information is gleaned from. Anyway, as I've already said, it's not actually to do with fishing.

I shall continue to answer any personal mails that I receive, as I always have done. And as long as Graham wants me to write PP each week, I'm happy to oblige.

I'm not angry, annoyed or anything like that. In fact I genuinely feel for Dove Baliff and hope he can deal with this part of his character.

Chub,

"your working late tonight Barney ????"

Are you saying you think "Dove baliff is me?"

I hope not, I never have and never will post to forums under an alias or anonymous. Most people who know me will tell you if I want to say something to someone I wont hide behind an alias !!!!!!!

Please Sedge, do not stop your posts on this forum. I always enjoy what you have to say. Not only that many of your posts contain a great deal of humour and lets face it we all need to laugh at ourselves sometimes.

Often I think the specialists amogst us take angling too seriously. After 50 years at it I've come to realise that you just cannot be all that serious about angling.

Most of us go fishing to get away from the mundane, the boring and the tedius in life. I also come to this web site for the same thing. Keep up you contributions Sedge, they are like a ray of light in an oft gloomy world.

I agree with everything Ron has written he has put it in a more eloquent way than I would.
I would probally have said don,t let these people grind you down.
I don,t use expletives any more but have been sorely tempted on this one.
Keep posting the site needs it.

Stewart,
In all walks of life there are people who will put others down and throw insults around to give the appearance of knowledge, bravery or more commonly just to start a fight. Be it from jealousy, contempt or plain ignorance, the effect is the same, I see you mentioned Des Taylor having the same treatment and hope you are not refering to me as I have said in the thread I started I didn't start the thread as a way of verbaly bashing or insulting him, just as B.N. didn't start this one for this outcome. If you wish to see what the readers of this forum think of you look at the responce you get from P.P. Every week people commend you on your writing and your honesty is never questioned. I think it would be a shame for you to stop your input into the forum as your humour and advice would be missed by many members of F.M.

I'd just like to add, that allthough I 'hide' behind an alias my reasons for this are that I'm used to message boards where people use aliases all the time so thought this would be the norm here. I hope that I've never insulted anyone in the way that Dove Bailif has...

Part of me wishes I'd not started this thread now !!! !!!!!

Hi Stew

I'd like to add my name to the "don't stop posting" petition. Negative comments do hurt, but try to remember all the positive ones, and friends you have met through this site & forum.

We anglers should stick together!

People that cheat, lie and attempt to discredit others (at the end of the day), do more damage to their own reputation. They'll never know the joy of catching great Barbel like you do Stew!

As most of you will know my FISHINGmagic email has been down for a short spell, and one of the effects was not receiving email notifications of forum postings, and I missed the ?Dove Bailiff? thread until it had already gained some momentum, to the point where it was obvious that the slur on Sedge had backfired and become a medium for fan mail rather than anything else.

More than anything I hope this ?Dove Bailiff? episode serves as a warning to anyone who thinks they can take a poke at someone by making unfounded accusations, and get away with it.

Most of the time I?ll delete offending posts, sometimes I?ll let them run because I know the offender is creating the opposite effect to what he wanted. At odd times I?ll miss an offending post, for no matter how vigilant myself and the one other moderator of this forum are, there will be times when circumstances conspire against us. Remember, unlike many fishing forums, FISHINGmagic has lots of posts every day, about all species. It?s the price we have to pay for the huge growth rate we?re enjoying, but a price worth paying as what?s on offer grows in quantity and quality.

There have been many comments on this and a related thread that I agree with, but the one comment I would like to heartily endorse is the one that says that ?Dove Bailiff?, and all the rest of the anonymous offending posters, have won if Sedge stays off the forum because of this episode.

Another thing I'd like to add is that it is wrong to speculate, no matter how subtly, who 'Dove Bailiff' is. It just leads to suspicion falling on the wrong people.
