What do you look for in a tackle box?

I thought it might be interesting to see what others use and what they look for in a tackle box.

Ideally i would want two - one which acts as a tardis to keep all my tackle safe, or to take on a fishing break if there there were several different venues to consider or alternative options when i arrive (such as a lake with a river behind it) and then a minimalist version for taking just what i might need on a particular short session. Unfortunately the closest i have ever got to the latter is to dump a few bits and pieces in a tupperware box (or in a bait apron) ..usually to find that something of critical importance had been left at home.

So for my tardis I still use a wooden tackle box based on a two-tier float box (15 inches by 9 inches and about 2.5 inches deep), with floats held in place by those foam strips, but with a 3 inch deep base added to it by my Godfather as a birthday present, when i was about 14 years old (late 1970s). The base has a removable tray part with separate compartments (used for hooklength spools/ wallets of hooks etc) and shot is keep in open tubs in a line of pine with holes cut to take them with a foam strip holding them in place when i shut the box. Theres further compartments underneath the tray for feeders/ledgers etc. I later customised the float sections to hold even more floats. I think theres about 250 now - with river floats in one section and wagglers etc etc in the other. Pole floats (not that i use a pole) are kept under the tray part.

This is all great and works a treat - never falls over, hinges work fine, holds all i need ..but it weighs over 9Ib and is bulky. On sentimental grounds it would be impossible to ever replace it - i also know where things are and could find them blindfolded. Before this box i vaguely remember having a plastic box, like a toolbox, where the trays came out as you opened it up. Always falling over, wouldnt shut if a tray was overfilled ..so was glad to be shot of it.

But what do you use and what advantages or disadvantages do you find? Are you emotionally attached to your tackle box as I am?

I used a fox box for a few years but then last year I discovered the Greys tackle box! This box is fantastic and far superior to the fox box as it has loads more room...A very big Tardis!!!
for my light roving, well you guessed it I opted for the Greys Compact tackle box, hold all the gear I need for a days fishing!
By the way, these boxes are superb Quality and good value, far better than the fox boxes ;)

I've got a Wychwood box which is excellent. The lid has a seperate compartment with foam and pins for storing hook lengths and the main section is divided into useful compartments some of which take purpose designed small boxes. I think its a matter of looking at as many of the huge range of plastic boxes as you can get your hands on and selecting what works best for you.

For my sea fishing I use an old ice cream tub and for my fly fishing my waistcoat pockets.

I've never mastered the art of taking only what I need for a coarse fishing session so I tend to take everything I could possible need. At least the weight helps to keep me fit!

I have to confess I am a Fox box fan. I use the large Fox Box (not the double sided one that has a propensity to fall open just when you least expect it).

I have looked at alternatives, including the Greys following an earlier thread on here, but I really have no reason to change as the FB does everything I want it to. I carry very few floats, just the ones I know I will use.

Many years ago I used a wooden type layered float box, great to use, but too heavy.

Being a bit of a tackle tart I went "modular" a couple of years back and have 6 main boxes....3 large TFG lock boxes and 3 medium Wychwood. There is a bit of duplication in that all contain basics like shot, scissors, baiting needles, loop tyers and the absolutely indispensable pair of Poundland Reading glasses. Thereafter they have the sort of hooks/floats/leads/feeders & "bits" that I need for that sort of fishing.
They are
"River" [basically chub & roach gear]
"Lake" [ general all round non specialist stuff...wagglers,feeders etc]
Tench
Zander/Pike
Barbel
Carp Floater

They all have a main residence in a certain bag/seatbox and depending on what I'm doing I either pick up that bag or swap the boxes round. Every bag has its own eg catty, sunglasses, rod rest heads etc. Likewise I have 3 rod holdall/quivers organised on similar lines. Float& feeder : Tench & heavy float/feeder : Barbel/Carp.

It all sounds terribly organised and a bit OCD but it isn't really. I just got fed up swapping stuff around between boxes/bags so one day I just worked out the things I needed two or more of,re-positoned a few things, bought a couple more others [like shot dispensers/float rubbers/hooklink material] and made sure I had a bit of an overlap so far as hooks went eg the "River" box has mostly small hooks but a few big ones.....the "Lake" box bigger hooks but a few small ones etc.

All of them contain 1,2 or more of those little "bits" boxes for stuff like swivels, beads and hairstops etc ....again there is a bit of duplication so that I know that no matter what box I pick up I will have whatever I might need.

Once I get on the bank I am terribly untidy and [like Sean] for years I took virtually everything I thought I might conceivably need but STILL often found I was short something. Now I am 99% certain I will have everything I need in "the day box" somewhere and I only need to take the box for the venue/species I'm after that particular day.

I'm a Tackle dealers dream ! I haven't got a "Pole box" yet...but I will have soon !

I've had a few over the years and am currently using a couple of Korum boxes and the full size Greys Prodigy Klip Lok tackle base (which happens to fit in the Korum bait and bits bag perfectly). The next time I'm looking for a tackle box I shall be looking for the name "Greys" across the lid.

Looks to me you are a bit OCD Benny...:D :D
The thing I have found is that its not my tackle box that is heavy, even when full the large one is not too bad, no, its the bloody Chub accessory bags that I carry, a large one for my feeders and a small one for my leads! Yes, I could just take what I need (or think I will need) but I have tried that on the ribble and ended up coming home as I have lost so many! (one day I am going to don the snorkel gear and find out what's at the bottom of that bloody river) :)

I'm also using a couple of the Korum boxes, they fit snugly into my old Fox evolution medium carryall (one flat on the bottom, the other sideways on end in the left over gap). I've been eyeing up the Greys box, just haven't got around to measuring it to see if it fits - it appears a similar length to the Korum and as long as it's no more than three or four inches wider.........

Hi

I use 3 fox boxes

2 double Mediums with all my carp and feeder gear plus enough float gear in case I want to switch method when I am out and a single medium that is only float gear, which is the only one I take if I know I am going to only float fish. and it makes going float fishing a nice lightweight event, whereas Carp fishing needs a barrow to lug everything to the bank.

Its so nice every now and then to just take one rod, one folding landing net, a Centrepin reel and a small tackle box fishing for a few hours, when having to lug all the normal gear was such that I might have decided not to go, as it was just too much effort.

Just remembered I have one of these in the loft

I used that for most of the 90's.

Talking of Tackle boxes, anyone remember what the name was of those grey plastic tackle boxes that we used to use in the 60's & 70's, the ones with the fixed dividers inside.

Thanks

Paul

Stewart boxes IIRC. I had one through the eighties and into the nineties until it was replaced with one of the black Daiwa boxes.

You can still get the Stewart boxes, they make all sorts of plastic stuff mainly for the gardening hobby, seed boxes and such...nice to see they are still in business :)
