Now don't tell anybody:wh but, sometime ago I was fishing in the pitch darkness on the Tyne up above Hexham. That's a long way from the sea. I was in the river trying for a Sea Trout. I am well used to the night time comings and goings and the strange noises that occur, I am a Sea trout man

Anyway, I was fishing away when I became aware of some movement to my left, then a man shaped "thing" rose vertically slowly out of the water and for the first time I "lost it". I was out of the river (falling twice) over the fence (ripping my waders) and legged it back to my Car.

After a while I got mad with myself and decided to find out what on earth this thing was. Taking my multi million candlepower I went back to the scene and yes, a flaming great Seal

That damned thing has been working it's way up the Severn all last summer. It was in Upton in September and the B/S lads reported it from Pixham a few weeks later.
They are social animals and imo its only a matter of time before it starts leaving the river and interacting with its 'fans' how long then I wonder before it wants to 'play' with some kid and we have a tragedy?

Imo the thing needs rescuing, re-socialising with its own kind and releasing, either that or stick it in a safari park somewhere.

Nothing unusual for the Gt. Ouse, I've seen plenty of them pin the past. They either head back to the sea or sometimes succumb to crossfire. This one is different in that it's managed to get into the gravel pits. Still it won't come to any harm in there so said the RSPB. No mention of the harm it will cause to the Carp & Pike in the pits. As they can't be seen they don't matter.

I think there is a bit of confusion here, this thread is about the seal which has been working its way up the Severn and has now arrived at Stourport, roughly 100 miles from the sea.

There is another one which has been reported in the Ouse system which has found it's way into a lake complex, I think it's West Drayton but I'm not familiar with the area so could be wrong.

Hooked a seal when fishing the relief channel for pike years ago, didn't have it on for long though, when seals come into fresh water fisheries they can do a lot of damage in a very short time.

That latest seal was in ferry lagoon on the fen drayton complex home to the record bream .

I am on the pike syndicate there it's a very lo stock venue as it is ,not uncommon for the carp guys to have 40 blanks in a row,I honestly think most of the carp guys are not even there to catch it's such a nice big wild place.

Will be interesting to see if any more pike get caught now ,and i have almost finished making my new bait boat DOOH!!.

There is a view that seals follow the salmon up river, which may well be why this one is so far upstream.

The news last week also showed record births of seals around our shores, kind of puts pay to the argument that sea fish are becoming scarce, doesn't it ?

i totally agree it should be caught and returned to the coast before it gets to comfy as ppl will start to feed it like they do the ducks and swans
