You cannot beat a tin of Campbells Rob! It sound like you had a good time and passed on some good skills to new anglers. You deserved that common!;)
Cheers, Mike. TBH, I had to work quite hard for my fish. The foul-hookings were particularly vexatious, but shortening the hair by half an inch converted the takes into solid hookholds just inside the mouth.

The site was full, so inevitably the foot traffic caused the fish to back off now and again. One fella, when told that I was catching them three feet from the bank, marched to the edge, pointed and said, "What, just down there?":eek:mg:

My now routine midweek trip down the Thames. Decided to use the miracle bait, halibut pellets. Bought a large bag on advice but to be honest previously I couldn't buy a bite. So set up with pellet banded hook and used a cut down maggot feeder for a spicy meaty groundbait. First I had to eat my chips I got on the way there. Nearly tasted as good as at the seaside.

First hour or so stared at a still rod tip so no change with the bait. Then I got a bite and hooked a nice roach. Not a shy bite either. Got him too the edge and realised he needed the net so I bent down to get it and the beggar took his opportunity and slipped the hook. Anther roach soon followed and safely landed so took a photo but my phone decided to randomly leave the camera app and I lost the pic. Had some really decent bites but didn't hit them all. Ended up with the 4 biggest roach I've ever caught. Fished right into dark and couldn't see the rod tip in the end.

Better go back tommorrow to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

A frustratingly late start altered my days strategy to one of dispensing with a day using a method feeder to a few hours of luring for a perch or two on a near local water.
Second cast alongside a weedbed and I connected to a tiny but perfectly proportioned pike of some 9" long.
By the end of the afternoon I had taken six more, lost three and had lots of nips and follows. All like peas in a pod.
Great fun.

Spent another day whip fishing for Rudd, still looking for one over 2lb and really thought today was the day, had 54 in total with 40 of them going over 1lb. Learnt that the secret to getting the larger fish is....larger bait, started on 4mm pellet and ended iup using 11mm. Guess they get a liking for the all the stuff heaved in by the carp anglers so makes sense.

Perfect sunrise

And lots of these.

I've been nursing a virus or cold or something for about 10 days now which finally erupted Tuesday afternoon. I had a dreadful night, up drowning at 3 am but still decided that I might as well feel rough bankside as at home so barrelled off for another crack at the crucians.

TBH by the time I got there I was wondering how good an idea it was and literally staggered to a swim as near to the car as I could get.The Big Feller joined me about an hour later and dropped in next door. This would be about midday. 6 and a half hours later neither of us had had anything that even looked like a bite....bar the tufty duckling that picked up one of Phil's baits. He resolved to stay until 7 whereas I though I'd knock it on the head......then my LH rod screamed off. A very welcome Serge saving tench of about 3lb or so.

In the next hour I had 4 more including a double hook up with the best a weighed 5-10. Next door Grumpy had a carp of about 6 ozs, a nice roach of about 1-2 and a little Joey tench. I've no doubt had I stayed I'd have had a couple more but Id run out of groundbait and the crucian clearly werent around. I'd also done a whole box of tissues and Grumpy had gone very quiet which in my experience is always a bit dangerous for anybody in the vicinity.

I'm paying for it today with another dreadful night and NO sympathy whatsoever from Mrs S.

Fancied fishing the river this morning but couldn't face the walk so I popped down the town to the canal where the river crosses...

image.jpg

There was barely any flow to speak of and the upstream wind held back my waggler even more... I persevered nonetheless and the fish didn't seem to mind a semi static bait (maggot). Gudgeon, roach, perch, dace and a chublet kept me busy along with a lump which broke my 0.06 Hooklink.
It was virtually bite a chuck as usual despite the attentions of a cormorant that often plunders this spot...

On chauffeur duties today taking Uncle to hospital for a round of chemo:( a spare couple of hours and with half a pint of maggots and my trusty whip in the back of the car headed off to the pool at Millers Arms in Canterbury.

Haven't fished there for a couple of weeks, water a bit lower and as always gin clear. Met with quite a frustrating sight, a decent sized shoal of fairly big chub, not something my whip could handle so a cautious drop in of the maggot required:eek: Didn't need to worry, the chub were totally disinterested in the red maggots being fed in over their heads, so too my targets, the roach and dace as they weren't spotted in any great numbers, all was about to become clear why!

After twenty minutes I finally hooked a perch which turned out to be the best fish of this short session weighing in at about a pound, good contest with the whip which was made even more challenging (and exciting) when a huge pike emerged from a blanket of weed in chase of my perch, definitely a pike well into double figures and it was providing some oooooo's and rrrrr's from an increasing number of spectators looking into this natural aquarium. Fishing directly 8ft above sitting on a low wall gives you a great view of what's occurring below the surface and sporting my new prescription Polaroids it was in Ultra HD:cool:

Sighs of relief and even a small ripple of applause as I scooped the stripey into the net before it became lunch for the many toothed villain. A persistent villain at that but just not quick enough as it lunged at the following five dace and roach I caught before having to pack up and head back to the hospital.

I'm tempted to head back tomorrow with something more substantial and dangle a flake of bread on the nose of one of them chub, I wonder if they'll still be there?

After far too long of not being able to get out and wet a line, I finally managed to escape life's demands and get out.

Now, normally, I'm the embodied antidote to the Kevin Clifford and Terry Hearns of this world, carp don't interest me greatly. In fact, if I'm honest, not at all.

However, after a recent trip up to my Mum's and the subsequent repatriation of my 40 year old Shakey Alpha carp rod, I owed it and my Mum a debt and also wanted to mark the ruby anniversary.

So, a couple of days back, I teamed it with an equally ancient Cardinal 55 and 12lb Stren line, a 5BB Drennan straight waggler down to a Super Specialist size 6.

I opted for my usual local commercial but on the original lake which is not super stocked and, obviously, far more of a challenge than the rest of the complex.

Baits were krill flavoured corn, bacon grill, 16mm halibut pellets and some decent sized prawns. A big pellet was hooked up and preparations were nearly ready.

After cattying in plenty of hemp, I cast some fifteen yards to the edge of a nice lily patch and awaited events. Events that didn't happen - in short.

After nearly an hour, the float danced, slid, jagged and, finally, shot under. I missed it. Cursing made slightly easier by a daytime barn owl, I rebaited and recast to the same spot.

A nearby shrieking grey heron was quickly followed by a Merlin (the RAF version this time) and I reached for the flask, well it usually works doesn't it?

I thought I'd fend off the ennui and opened the bacon grill. Stuff the usual 8mm approach, I carved off a mini housebrick and impaled it, a cube around an inch and a half all round.

Out it went, same spot and the flying circus was joined by an art deco era biplane that looked stylish but so outdated. I was just thinking about this nonogerian performer when the float shot under and the strike brought forth a single expletive on my part - short but very, very Anglo Saxon.

I knew it was fight time, big time. And so it turned out. I knew this was probably the second biggest carp I'd ever hooked. After a hell of a fist fight, dragging and real jungle combat, the rod performed admirably and after twenty minutes of duelling, I slipped the net under what I knew was my biggest landed. A passing carper went scuttling back to his own swim and returned with scales. It went 22lb 7oz. My first ever twenty but I'm in no hurry to add to it, honestly. However, if it had been my first 3 perch or double barbel, I'd still be there now.

Another cube of meat brought a mirror around 7lbs. Then two tinies, between 1 and 2lbs. A much smaller cube brought a bream circa 2lbs and that was it. I felt I used the rod and, hopefully, repaid some of the price my Mum had paid for it so many years previously.

I packed up and drove home no better or more eager a carp angler than I'd set out. A big mug of tea and a crumpet later and I picked up the phone and tried explaining to my Mum, somewhere near as old as the biplane earlier, what halibut pellets were and what a Cardinal 55 was. It wasn't going to be easy. "Mum, 40 years ago you bought me a rod that's never left my thoughts since...."

The carp made even less of an impact than it did with me. All she wanted to know was was I happy, was my job secure, was the house ok and the cat well.

Mums, eh? Bless em. Till the next time, well tomorrow actually......:)

I headed off to the river in the latter half of the afternoon today, method of fishing would be swimming the stream, target species was chub and barbel and bait was sweetcorn and maggots...pellets are no good for barbel ;).
I wasn't going to stay long, a couple of hours would be enough for me. I'd taken the 11ft supero avon with the intentions of testing it's metal . It was the wrong choice really as there was quite a blow on when I got to the intended swim but luckily it was a form of upstream one.
The river is quite wide here and I waded across to about half way and started to throw in a few handfuls of maggots and corn. I had a number of trotts through but didn't have a sniff of a bite. I was a little complacent due to the lack of action and as I was gawping about I noticed a mink mooching on the opposite bank and squeaked it, it obediently slipped into the river to come too me and struggled against the flow in it's attempt to reach me.... "the squeak"... anyhow it was being washed down stream in the powerful flow and had to swing round and come directly upstream to get to me. It was in limbo as it got about ten feet downstream of me and was swimming as hard as it could but it couldn't get any closer. I said out loud to it "now your stuck arn't you, you fool", and went to tap it with the end of my rod and surprisingly it didn't dive under as they usually do but just struggled back across the river...all that effort for nowt !
I continued to fish and decided to catty out a continuous stream of maggots and corn at a leisurely pace and without trotting at all. First trott through after that and the float was pulled under and my strike hit home, at last a effin fish :w. I won't go on boring you with all the details about catching the fish or about squirrels dropping bits on my head etc etc, but I finished up with six barbel and one chub. Obviously the rod wasn't as nice to use as a float rod but it was the next best thing and is still the only Avon rod I've ever come across that's suitable for trotting.
A couple of pic's ....

If you noticed the bent alloy stem on the float in the third pic down (it's laying on the fish itself), that was done on the rocks whilst playing the fish. Good thing about those alloy stems is you can just bend them back, they might not be perfectly straight again but they still function perfectly well :).

Excellent prose Dorsetandchub and a heartwarming tale! Hardly anyone has a good word for Shakey rods but they seem to do their business with aplomb.

Look after Mum!:;)

It looks like I missed a treat yesterday Ian! I'll just have to make do with wall to wall sunshine!

It's like that here today Mike!
It was about 21 degrees and sunny yesterday, i'd left my sunglasses and peaked cap in the car which was about a mile down river so had to put up with the glare on the water:(. It was a relief when a cloud passed in front of it for a few moments and more of a relief when it dropped down behind the tree canopy.
Hope your enjoying your holiday over there....ya jammy so and so ;).

Another nice afternoon on the fishery yesterday, mick still on holiday, so had my choice of swims, only one other angler on the pond I like, and the swim I wanted was free, then I discovered I'd left one of my bags at home, containing my silver fish gear :eek:mg:.

So it was to be a carp session, and a day sat behind two rods and alarms was appealing, nice leisurely day watching the water and waiting for a bite, put one rod across to the island margin, and one in the margin by me, island swim rod delivered by my little Chinese bait boat with some pellets, and the other swim I could feed by hand.

First fish weighed twelve pound thirteen, at around four thirty, then I had to wait till seven o clock, for the next at fourteen pounds fifteen ounces, both fish from near margin, on this rod I had been trying a piece of peperami which I'd made into a pop up by drilling and inserting a piece of cork, fished on a Ronnie rig, like these rigs, they work well and hook the carp in the centre of the bottom lip.

About eight o clock, there was a terrific swirl and bow wave out, it really moved some water, looked like I'd missed one of the big ones, one day I will get one over twenty pounds from here, another chance missed I fear, it was
still a nice day, plenty of roach topping and lots of bream hanging just under the surface, and a young robin was with me most of the day ?

Had what has become a rare occurrence just lately what with having become the family taxi after my lads car accident I actually got out fishing for a few hours.

Turned up to get my day ticket only to find that the lake I had planned on fishing was all booked for a match so had a drive round to look at other lakes and settled on a swim where no one could encroach and with a surprisingly cool breeze off my back.

4 hours fishing produced just 2 fish from lots of very finicky bites, an f1 and a common of around 4lbs, enjoyed being out all the same and next time I will ring the day before to check on matches.

Had a couple of hours on a new (for me) fishery Yesterday. It's only 5min away from my Nanan and Grandads so I asked him if he'd like to come.
He was the one who introduced me to fishing when I was a little kid, back in the day he was a big angler. Going out on the rivers and bringing some trout back for tea.
He's 87 now, got a bad knee so can't do much. Anyway, long story short he came over for half an hour.
Had a couple of little silvers come out.
Then as soon as I cast in, a big bite.
Lovely sized Roach, my Grandads face lit up, he loves Roach and was very impressed with the size of it. I don't have any weighing scales but my Grandad said it was close to a pound. My PB for a Roach.

Didn't catch much more, but all in all it was a good day out. Old master on the bank with a novice.

The ebbtide on the lower tidal started at 1-30 pm today so not much time to do any business. My approach was entirely hemp n tare under a stickflote.
A tricky breeze in my face didn't make things very favourable but with a little care and hard work with a shirt buttoned home made stick I was happy when a few nice redfins started to show interest, a little hit and miss early on but any lull in the wind had me taking the roach in two's and threes before the wind got tricky again
A number eight backshot eased things a little as did my constant re arranging of my number nine shot closest to my size 20 hook to a 1•1 hooklengths.
My back hurt after two hours but I soldiered on regardless.
Still a stop start catch rate but I was building up a nice net of fish.
Come four o clock the wind died down completely and what a difference it made, the fish just came at me proving my approach was correct, that breeze cost me dear but after four hours stood up I was ready to leave but somewhat reluctantly .
A really nice afternoon and one I hope to repeat again as soon as I can!
