There is no doubt that the palomar knot is a very strong knot and very simple to tie.

However, I now have a doub whether I tie it correctly.

After passing the loop over the hook I gradually draw it all together.

I make sure the loop is off the eye of the hook and closes around the over hand knot part of the line.

However, in some instructions I have seen the knot is shown closed up with the loop around the eye or still on the shank.

    Which is correct?

I always tie it as per your first description.

Same here, If you left it as per the second description there is essentially slack line in the knot which will tighten suddenly with a fish on, causing, I would expect, undue stress on the lineand knot.

The first way is definitely the correct way.

Your right Matt, several sites I have just checked do leave the loop on the shank - but the Youtube link and the one below do it the way - I think - is correct.

Makes me wonder how many people are tying it wrong and have problems.
