Hi all,how many float rods do you all use? I was considering buying another longer one maybe 14ft. I don't mind making rods up when I get to a venue but would be nice to have one setup for rivers with floating line and one for still waters. I will get a reel for each rod with a couple of spools , do I need a floating line and a sinking line? I was hoping to buy something in bulk like maxima, which I think is sinking, how do you all go about it?

Thanks

I've got 2. One 13ft and one 10.
I don't have the need for anything else. The shorter for swims with overhead branches etc, the longer for everything else.

I have several float rods but I only use one at any one time.

The float rods that I use the most are:

  • 13ft Drennan MKIV Tench float rod - Barbel, Chub, Tench, Crucians. & Carp. 4lb to 8lb lines.

  • 15ft Hardy Marksman Specialist float rod: Tench, Crucians, Roach, Dace, Chub and small Carp. 3lb to 5lb lines.

  • 13ft Drennan Acolyte Ultra Float rod: Roach, Rudd, Dace, Chub, Crucians. 3lb to 4lb+ lines.

  • 17/20ft Shakspeare Annexe float rod: as above. I use this in very deep swims (Im not a great lover of the sliding float) or for trotting under the rod tip tight up against the far bank on small streams.

  • 12ft Mitchell Commercial float rod: Carp, Tench, Crucians, Chub & Barbel . 3lb to 6lb+ lines.

  • 13ft Diawa Amorphous Wisker light float Rod (AMW13L): Silvers. 2lb to 3lb main lines and hooklengths down to 8oz.

More than is remotely sensible yet, strangely, still not quite enough!;):D

From 9' to 17' with every point, bar 12' and 16', in between.
Fast Action for float fishing rivers, through action for pellet waggler and a more middling action for stillwater waggler fishing. Lighter rods for bit bashing, middling for average sized fish and heavy rods for carp and barbel.

13'0 match, stays at our flat, 13-15'0 three piece, bigger rivers, 11'6 & 10'0 two piece rods smaller rivers or canals, any of the above for pools. From the above posts I seem to need a few more :wh

I have and use about five in the range 11-13ft. Different actions from Avons to ultra light stick rods. Could still do with a 14-17ft float rod. One of my favourites is the 12ft 9" Drennan Tench Float, another is an old 13ft Daiwa Amorphus Whisker, and my early Normark 11ft Specialists with Avon actions. I have no rod newer than about 15 years old, if i wanted to a commercial type rod i would need one as a matter of priority. I dont have a short 10-11ft ultralight float rod either - for those small rivers or compact swims.

I only have two and use one of them much more than the other. One is 12' which I sometimes use on ponds and the most used one is 13' which lives in my river rod bag.

I got 4 pellet waggler rods, 2 at 10ft that I use as ledger/feeder rods, an 11ft that I use as a pellet waggler, and a 12ft that I use for all general float work.

I keep thinking about a 12ft drennan ultra light as a couple of our ponds have had the majority of the carp over 5lb removed and have been restocked with rudd to1.5lb crucian to over 1.5lb and hundreds of small carp.

I also fancy a 17ft rod for the deep swims on our specimen tench water.

Other than to mention that my float rods cover a range from 11 feet to 20 feet I refuse to elaborate on the grounds that I might incriminate myself towards certain previous wives . . . . . . .

Having spent a lot of my time match fishing I did at one time find that I had 5 identical Drennan 13' float rods . . . . . . . . well, you can't waste time changing a hook length or untangling wind knots now, can you.

I took those out of service when I managed to get my hands on 4 Diawa Tommy Pickering Connoisseur float rods, and those are excellent!

Still got the Drennans somewhere in the garage though . . . . . . just in case

I've quite a few float rods but, as most of my float fishing involves 'trotting' rivers, I find that the 12' Titan 2000 and 15' GTI cover most of my needs.

Four... a heavy 14' designed for commercials (and a bit unforgiving for trotting, though i have had a go..). A daiwa 13 aquaite which is great on still waters for silvers through to small carp. A shakespeare Mach3 13' waggler, which is probably the best jack of all trades, still water or rivers, it's a very sensitive yet strong rod... and last but not least, a 10' three piece grandeslam pellet waggler rod, who's specific purpose is to fit sideways across the boot of the car when we go on holiday.
