Very interesting reading there Nicepix. Someone has done their homework.
I knew Salmon pastures as a lad and it was'nt a nice place, fall in and dissolve seemed an appropriate expectation back then.
In the early eighties however it was noticeable thatthings had changed and somehow roach and chub appeared along with millions of minnows.
The most startling thing I wittnessed was a day in september , I was satanding on a branch over the water when I saw what I thought was a long piece of trailing weed but it started moving farward upstream--- to this day it was the biggest eel I have ever seen.
Remarkable considering how thirty years earlier it was devoid of life.

Great link Nicepix. I shall look forward to reading these.

I can relate to your experience flightliner. I was born in Brightside and recall there were only two colours, the black of the soot and the orange of the furnaces and Don. The polluted discharge made the river steam even in summer.

The smell of Wards brewery could be bit strong too.
