I never thought I would pole fish until I bought one a few years ago, after watching other people using them I bought a cheap margin pole which got me started, it was ok but a bit heavy, so I upgraded to a Preston edge monster 10 meter pole which is very light but strong enough for carp etc, it came with two top kits and I bought another, so I’ve one with light elastic, one with medium and one with heavy elastic for the carp.

I soon got the hang of it fishing plus tying rigs, hook lengths and elasticating it, plenty of helpful videos on utube.
and I’ve caught lots of fish on it as well, in fact I’m catching a lot more now than I ever did, it’s a skill worth learning.

Anyone wanting to dabble into pole fishing? Angling Direct have the Ron Thompson Gangster pole on sale at the moment, 11m with 2 top kits for £47.99.

Useful as a starter pole or even a margin pole.

They're out of 4m - just had a look. Crazy price - thought about them for a mate who does lots of canal coaching,
I managed to get one, at £11.99 posted just couldn’t say no. Cosmetically looks nice. One of the club ponds is stuffed with Rudd, with plenty of mermaids (brown goldfish) so should be fun to travel light and have an hour or two on there. Will make a change from my usual ‘house moving’ barrow load of kit for matches!

I mentioned it to my coaching pal, but he explained the C&RT he does coaching with have accounts with tackle firms and get their gear for the kids by that route. He also explained that they tend to go for short poles with light elastics - he used no3 - as it suits the learners' striking techniques a bit better!

First quick session with the whip yesterday and glad to report it’s an excellent piece of tackle at that price. Went to a little club pond with a pint of maggots and whipped out 44 Rudd, 5 mermaids and a perch. Great fun. The whip was perfect for the Rudd and handled the mermaids, which motor a bit, in its stride.

I have heard that the matrix MTX margin pole is discontinued due to new version now out .
It's on offer at a couple of places around £150.
I already have one and at that price I would get another for extra topkits and spare sections .
Trouble is I can't remember where it was on offer .
