The advent of modern desk top publishing applications mean that it is easier and cheaper than ever to produce a magazine.

As a general rule I would say that is reflected in the banal and repetitive content therein.

As for perusing old magazines, often reading the advertisements of the time is the most engaging aspect. Some of the claims are incredible, but amusing.
