Can someone tell why most bivies aren't in camo colours. When a splash mat is. Is it because the carp can see the mat and not the bivvy.
Sorry just a like is not enough for this!! Top banana!!

I may wear camo myself sometimes, or a bright coloured jumper on a box sometimes too. I may run a stick down a river one day and fish for double figure carp the next.

I do laugh at the people who follow every fad, its their life if it gives them a buzz Let them get on with it, but quality p takes like Steve2 are classic'

Not trying to tell you how to suck eggs but in those situations I use the line clip on the reel and then mark the distance with a small bit of electrical tape on the line. You then just need to clip up to your tape marker and cast in the direction of a point on the horizen...specific tree, Pylon etc ...

I do much the same, but use pole elastic set next to the clip, not tape.

You have to use a marker float to get the distance for the distance sticks in the first place. Each to their own.

Splash mat, hahaha :eek:mg:

Another thing not needed, just have your bank sticks that bit higher up.

This does two things, keeps your reels from getting covered in Sh$$e, and you don't end up with a bad back, or creaking knees.

Thats Three things :D

If you insist on teeny weeny banksticks, that leave your £750 quid reels a few millimetres from the ground, splash mats can be more important than you might think. You really don't want splashback grit and mud in your Basiairs every time it rains. Why they don't just use banksticks more than six inches longer is another matter entirely. ;)

There is loads of stuff out there that can seem utterly pointless to anyone uniterested in the discipline or tactic concerned. As ridiculous as it might first appear, there are usually reasons, even if they aren't particularly good ones, for their existence.

I'm no fluff chucker, sea angler or piker. There are loads of items for all three that leave me perplexed. However, I've got very little interest in any of them.

Got to agree with Sam here, the carp boys use exceptionally expensive equipment and fish in all weathers. I'm no big carp fisherman but I would guess the small banksticks are to keep the line as low as possible to keep it away from the elements?

Total guess but only thing that makes sense? I do have to say though id never EVER buy one - what's wrong with an old bath mat,bin liner or something you can get lying around the house for free? ;)

Happy to suck eggs Phillip. Unfortunately tape, marker knots etc can move. Sticks don't.

I am happy to be ridiculed for using banksticks to achieve distance measurements in return for the confidence that my bait is at the distance I want it to be.

This is not my specialist area (not many are lol) but I'd never heard of splash mats until recently.

I'm highly suspicious though, could these be a contender?

Can anyone in the know confirm or deny...

This is outrageous!!

Anyone can see that the clutch knobs on those reels are not exactly aligned. How on earth does that angler expect to get a run? Madness.

I don't blame any angler for treating their beloved gear with care but that mat thingy is too small, and is set to far forward so if the reels do fall they'll most likely fall on the ground at the back of it. Those pegs are in a bad spot na'll.
I reckon a small door matt from pound land or a cheap unhooking mat would be a better option, or better still don't drop your gear lol.

What about the Polaris floats that find the depth automatically and are so long they need to go in the rod holdall instead of the float tube?

I do like the mushroom bankstick pusher though.

I can only guess that the camo mat is to avoid being spotted by the ever-more-prevalent camera drones.

Yer right, Tigger, and if it were a bit longer, it could protect the bobbins, too, and keep them nice and clean when they drop off the line.
I'd forgotten about the risk of reels falling off - and I use ancient rods with sliding rings, so it's a real risk - I must go and evostik some bubble-wrap inside a rubble bag. No expense spared to conserve my Aerialites' good looks!

Afterthought - d'uhh - where ARE the bobbins? If they're cammo, its dam' fine cammo, but why?

Splash mats or whatever were first used when monkey climbers were in fashion to stop grit/mud splashing up and stopping the monkey climber climbing when you had a run.
Get longer banksticks - don't need anything else to lug about.

For total protection maybe someone should market a reel umbrella to team up with the splash mat ? ....to stop them getting wet from above as well as below...:D

...actually to be fair splash mats (or rather rod mats) had another use as well which was to flatten any grass or objects out of the way of your bobbins..

Nah, just let the rain wash the muck off the reels, no need for a mat :wh

Just going back to the distance sticks for a moment ...one thing I cant get my head round ....

Surely as you walk the line round them the amount of line/distance can change depending on how well you actually wind the line round the sticks? ….So for example if I set the sticks up say 15 feet apart but each loop of line is not kept tight ,& perfectly parallel & horizontal between each stick then the actual length of line running between the sticks wont be 15 feet, it will be more because the line will be at an angle. Multiply that numerous times for a long cast and the end result could be quite a big margin of error at the end ?

For example I would not want to use distance sticks for those occasions when I am trying to cast as close as possible to say an Island margin when even just a few inches too much can put you in the trees.

I stress I have not used them so I am not speaking from first hand experience here so perhaps I have it all wrong...

i was thinking that this thread was developing into an anti carper rant :wh
