Swing tip rod

Swing tip rod wanted
I have spent most of this afternoon looking on the internet for a swing tip rod and only come across two a Shakespeare around £30 or a Tri-cast at £260
I’m not a fan of Shakespeare so that out…
can any of you recommend a rod around the £60-£100 new or used around 10-11ft length

My swing tip rod came about as a result of clumsiness when I broke the tip on my Darent Valley specimen rod I bought an end eye with a thread and then a selection of swing tips. I do enjoy using it!

If you have an old rod or buy say a Maver Abyss X( I bought one for £10) then remove the end eye by applying heat( a lighter) to the end eye to melt the glue and then using araldite or similar glue on a threaded eye. Believe me if I can do it anyone can

I agree with the above ,buy a screw end tip eye and away you go.

Or even... if it's to be a dedicated swingtip rod, dispense with a top ring and connect your tip direct to the rod via an angled rubber tip or a soft silicone one as you prefer. If the second ring is too far back for your taste, whip on a new intermediate an inch from the end to leave room to slide the rubber on.

Or then again, if you have a tip rod that came with multiple quivertips - most of mine came with two or three - and you don't use the heaviest, you can chop this one down by a few inches and make it your swingtip carrier, making your rod a swing or quivertip rod. You need a stiffish tip for this, as things get a bit too bouncey if you add a swing tip to too fine a rod tip. None of my rods have a screw ring, even though several can be fitted with a swingtip.
I bet the Tricast rod is brilliant, but a bit of adaptation will come in cheaper.

Now, that's a great tip. May even knock one up later to go with my Fox Specialist and Avon rods, which will be about 10ft without the length of a quivertip - just the right length for a swingtip rod.:thumbs:

You might want to have a look at a Daiwa Theory Barbel rod. One of the tips comes with a screw thread. It's a great rod. I have one (a little heavier than advertised). It comes in two test curves but may be more powerful than you want. They cast a long way, for what that is worth. Within your budget.

Have to agree. I have that thirty quid rod and am madly in love with it. Just spent two days catching 5 - 15 pounders with it ( cyprinids that pull hard). May not have the catchet but brilliant rod. Superb.

A shout out for the Drennan DRX stillwater feeder rod which comes with three quiver tips and a swing tip. They do turn up on ebay and I got one for £100 a few years back.

Class piece of kit, especially for soft mouthed skimmers and bream.

Shame...you're missing out on some good quality, very good value for money gear.

Something like a secondhand Daiwa Matchman (in glass) would fit the bill if you want to go retro and do not need to cast far (40 ya or so).

IMHO Shakespeare gear is brilliant value for money. Yes, I do prefer my Tricast rods but I have caught quite a few barbel on 2 Shakespeare feeder rods that cost £80 total.
I have to add that this thread is making me feel quite nostalgic about swing tipping. I am far from being an expert on the topic but in the right circumstances it was an excellent method and presumably still is.

I had a look at one of these yesterday and it looks and feels sweet as a nut, the finish is superb, it's a joy to hold and has decent components, if I was looking for another swing tip rod I'd be all over it. Looks like another winner from Shakespeare.

I have a push in swing tip that I made to fit my Drennan medium feeder rod.
Easy enough to make, I haven't used it for at least 20yrs but it worked fine. All that's needed is a short piece of solid glass. I got mine from an old broken quiver tip.
