For those interested in angling and/or education, tune into Redshift radio tonight. Kev O Sullivan will be appearing as a guest on 'Fishing, Not Catching' from 9pm.
Kev teaches disaffected youngsters and young adults at Fir Tree Fishery, Wigan and uses angling as a medium to get the youngsters back into learning, training and ultimately employment.
There will also be an up to date birdwatching report from around the north-west and a few decent tunes thrown in too.

Fishing, Not Catching on Redshift Radio tonight.
In the studio tonight we have Steve Beech. Steve has written articles for many angling publications including Anglers Mail, Improve Your Coarse Fishing, and Barbel Fisher magazine.
Steve will be talking about the catastrophic pollution of the River Dane over a decade ago, the role he played in the subsequent recovery and will give his views on the state of the river today compared to back then.
Steve will also be talking about barbel rivers and giving his views on predation and why there appears to be a distinct lack of barbel showing in some rivers around the country.

In the studio tonight we have Dr Stuart Clough, a director of APEM ltd, Europe’s leading independent environmental consultancy, specialising in freshwater and marine ecology and aerial surveys. Amongst other topics, I will be specifically asking how APEM managed to eradicate Red Signal Crayfish from a Scottish loch and if this is a viable method for control on other UK waterways.

As part of his PhD Stuart studied the movements of radio tagged dace in the River Frome, Dorset, and published the first record of dace carrying out a daily migration between two distinct locations up to several miles apart. An expert in his field, Stuart has been writing angling articles for over 20 years, including a weekly column in the Anglers Mail for over 15 years. He has also wrote for several magazines including Waterlog, Pike & Predators and Improve your Coarse Fishing.

On ‘Fishing, Not Catching’ tonight we have Korum Tackle consultant Chris Ponsford.

Chris is what I would call a genuine all round angler. Having caught over 250 double figure barbel and numerous river carp, he has also match fished at a very high level, competing for Silstar Bathampton (and other teams) in the first division national.

Chris also competes in sea fishing competitions from both beach and boat and has a verified casting distance PB of 256yards, set in the 1980s. Chris has also successfully competed in both fly fishing and fly casting competitions.

Tonight on Fishing, Not Catching it will be me, all on my lonesome. Due to the weather and traffic issues we have decided to postpone tonight's proposed guest appearance for a few weeks.

However, tonight I will be talking about the pollution on the River Mole in Surrey, the catastrophic Adelie Penguin breeding season in Antarctica, the usual local bird report, rumours of a huge bream, plastic pollution, and indeed anything else I can think of loosely related to the angling environment.

On ‘Fishing, Not Catching’ tonight we have Ian Doyle.
Ian is the Conservation Officer for Prince Albert Angling Society and we will be talking about invasive species, the threat they pose and ways in which angling clubs, and indeed the wider public can help to control their spread.
We will also be discussing more general, estate and fishery management issues and will also have the regular ‘twitcher update’ of rare bird sightings from around the region.

Mr Hackett on tremendous form last night....

Too right! - shame about all the music getting in the way of the chat! :D:eek:mg: Phil's normally a very good speaker/talker but I thought the regular music breaks broke up the flow of conversation and caused a break in the chain of thought. Normally almost impossible to stop him when he gets going!:D

Has the prog ever been tried without the music - or is that part of the licensing requirements?

Looking forward to the next one
Cheers,
Mike

Nothing to do with licensing mate, it's the way I choose to run it currently, all told am still finding my own feet too, so chat, tune, chat, tune etc I feel it breaks things up a little for the guests so they don't run out of things to say. (Never happen with Phil I know so in that respect I probably judged it wrong this week).

However, genuinely, thanks for the feedback and (positive) criticism, next time he comes in I'll definitely change the format slightly.

Ta Guy's, I really enjoyed the experience of it. If the opportunity is offered to you to do the show, I'd recommend you do it. Eddie's very good at leading through what will happen as the show porgresses. The off air comments (whilst the listener is hearing the records) are very funny indeed.

Thanks Phil, there's a reason some of those comments are off air too... especially when I get confused as to which song to introduce...

On ‘Fishing, Not Catching’ tonight we have John Ellis.
John is the National Fisheries and Angling Manager for the Canal and River Trust and tonight I will be asking John about the work that the Canal and River Trust undertake, including the attempts by the trust to get more anglers and clubs involved in canal angling.
We will also have the regular ‘twitcher update’ of rare bird sightings from around the region and music also.

Joining me on ‘Fishing, Not Catching’ tonight is Dave Riley.
Dave is a very successful, albeit very low profile and understated angler who specialises in ultralight lure fishing.
Dave has had some astonishing catches of perch from a variety of venues, most notably the Shropshire Union and Trent and Mersey Canals and tonight I will be doing my best to find out how he goes about his business.
We will also have the regular ‘twitcher update’ of rare bird sightings from around the region, a quick look at what’s going on in the environment and music also.
