if you had to be one which would you choose?

for me it would have to be roach. Possibly one of the toughest to be if you want to get close to a record.

on the other hand if you wanted to get near or beat a record which would you go for?

I would also choose the roach, 99% of my fishing is now for roach. They are not big compared to carp but the larger ones are swines to locate and tempt.

I don't think that there is an easy current record to target, in fact a fish of 50% of the record is a really fine catch.

It got me thinking because I have 2 weeks off of work over Christmas and I have possibly one of the most prolific roach stretches in the country on my doorstep. yesterday I fished it on the waggler with maggot and not a bite for 2hrs then the last 4hrs I put over 30lb in the keepnet...6 roach over a pound, best 1.11lb. with a couple of nuisance 3lb perch thrown in.

normally I would try lots of venues in that time and really vary my fishing...but I think for 2 weeks I may become a roach specialist!

If I had to beat a record locally, I'd probably try for dace. There's an outside chance of chub being a possibility. For just about any other species, except perhaps the tiny stuff like minnows, I doubt there's any realistic chance of coming close to a record.

For myself it would also have to be the roach as well.

Locally I still have some very good roach fishing where I can catch on bread baits, maggot, caster, red worms, hemp and tares as well as sweet corn.

Roach can be caught on a variety of methods as well from float to lead to feeder so encompasses not only many different baits but many different methods as well . . . . . .

As a side benefit locally wherever you find the roach there are usually some dace and chub ad well, so a "bonus" fish is always a possibility . . . . . win-win . . .

If it where on a river it would barbell, if it where a still water it would be tench. Reason for my choices being, I rate them both the best pound for pound fighters we have in our waters and I like catching fish that pull back hard. I also like the methods used to catch them.

Most probably species that are scarce in my parts, so either Barbel or Crucian.

If I could only fish for one species and one only I would probably go for Carp. They already have the biggest single species following so they have to have something going for them.

Regarding the record, if my life depended on it, it would have to be one of the lesser known or mini speicies...minnow, Silver Bream, pumpkinseed sort of thing of thing.

Of the bigger more general species to my mind there is no doubt whatsoever that the one species that is there to be broken is the Zander record. The British record is nowhere near the potential for that species, I know of fish up to 35lb just across the channel.

The Zander record is going to go UP !

Mike.. There is something special about a big bream.. Probably one of the hardest species to catch 15lb bream..

Anyway...... Summer... Bream and anything else.... Winter..... Pike

If I HAD to choose one I would probably give up fishing. Well maybe not upon reflection but I would just pretend to fish the the compulsory species and carry on dallying here and there as usual enjoying everything that came along.

If I was a single species specialist Pike being mine my season would very short due to clubs out of date pike fishing rules.
So I am pleased to say that most of the time I just fish for what ever comes along.

As they say, variety is the spice of life, I would find it boring to just fish for one species, I’m happy to just catch whatever comes along, sometimes I do set out to catch a particular kind of fish, but I usually catch a variety of species, and it all makes the day enjoyable. And that’s what matters nowadays.
