There has been a lot of talk of the Drennan Acolytes snapping just below the tips. I think the perception of the reality can be somewhat skewed by the same break being discussed several times, making it seem more common than it actually is... Maybe?

Has anyone experienced this happening with other makes of float rods or is this something particular to the Acolytes alone?

Ralph.

I don't own an acolyte but I have never had a float rod break on a fish while using it, the only breakage I have ever had was while moving and the tip pushed into the ground, entirely my own fault.

Never broken a rod in use apart from the odd splitcane ones many years ago by casting heavy weights. But I have by shutting them in car doors, treading on them and driving over them.

Only one breakage - touch wood - in a lifetime fishing, and that was when, during one of those days when you do everything wrong, I pulled impatiently at a wrap-over on a DAM float rod and snapped a foot off the tip. Apart from being more careful since then, I'm never tempted to go for rods or poles that boast of low weight as a primary virtue - I like light tackle, but pushing that to the limits makes things more fragile, and besides, I've often found that rods with a bit of "meat" (we're talking grams, of course) have a sweeter action and a nicer feel. No offence to Acolyte fans, but when I swapped rods with a mate for a session I appreciated why he rated his 15' Acolyte, but the rather 'steely' feel wasn't for me, and I was happy to get my fractionally heavier own rod back. Talking to blokes behind the counter in a tackle shop that sees a lot of broken pole sections in for repair, they tell me that sections are so thin-walled in pursuit of lightness that the slightest knock causes damage which may go undetected until the next time the section is stressed, and then it fails. I just mention this as it suggests the breakage of a tip or other section might not have been caused by whatever you are doing at the time, but by an earlier stress or impact. A bit like the motorbike racer who comes off at a corner, but understands he came off there because he started to get out of line 2 corners earlier.

Some rods are renowned for tip breaks. In some cases it has barely dented their sky high reputations. Just look to the number of Normark 2000 rods with tips shorter that they should be.

I've broken very few rods over the years. Only one has broken on its first use. Only that one would I blame on a flaw. The rest can be attributed to something else. It may be human error on my part, or it might be accidental damage, but I'd have felt like a fraud if I tried to blame anyone but myself.

Been there Kev! Only I did not understand why I came off and I wasn't racing!

The early Preston Carbonactive 13' float rod (c2000) lost a few inches from the tip whilst in use, as did my son's soon after being bought. Both were replaced by Preston (via out local t/s) and both are still in use without any further problems. In respect of the Normark 2000 series, the tip on my Titan is as good as new and is by far and away my most used rod over the last 20 years, or so.

My Daiwa 13 foot Tdr match rod tip broke on the 3rd use about 6 inches from the top. I suspect it was due to the tip catching on an overhead bush. I repaired it by splicing a carbon tip from an old whip and have been using it for about 5 years since.

To be fair, I'm sure nearly all rods (if not all) get broken by someone somewhere.

I had a hardy 11ft avon smuggler rod snap clean off six inches from the tip whilst casting out a drennan puddle chucker float!
The only thing I could put it down to was the possibility that the weighted end of float hit the blank on the cast, couldn't think of any other reason.
I'd been catching smallish fish for a couple of hours previious to this and had given the rod a real testing before taking it out to use.....the rod was brand new.
If the float had hit the rod on the cast I would have thought the blank would be resiliant enough to stand up to it, especially as it was an avon rod with quite a thick tip section and the float was only a light'ish one.
Things like this happening really can make you loose any confidence in the product.

I took a half an inch off my Hardy Specialist 13' float rod but it was entirely my own fault, caused by a wrap over on a cast during a night session with a Starlight float.

Got another tip ring whipped on pronto and it's made no difference to the rod but I was absolutely mortified when I first noticed come dawn, the funny thing was that I couldn't figure out during the night why the float was very gradually submerging and it was the broken off tip ring slowly sinking on a taught line :eek:mg:

I have broken one or two tip sections over the years due to my clumsiness and had a couple of ones I couldn't explain
1st on taking my 12 ft matchpro ultralight out of it's padded sleeve the tip section was broken mid way up . I assume it must have got a knock some how , that one knocked me sick .

2nd a Maver feeder rod which just snapped on the butt section as I hooked a bream , no idea why . I'd just been fishing a smallish ground baitfeeder at around 30 metres , no idea what happened but I don't own any Maver rods now

The late 70s Sundridge Kevin Ashurst match rods were notorious for breaking but always replaced FOC - I broke two, one whilst playing a 2lb carp a bit hard, the other swinging in an old boot (mate's rod when he'd gone up the shops)...

Broken 1/2" off of about five Normarks but otherwise all intact barring handle modifications. Broke 3" off a Daiwa Connoisseur stick float rod in a match, line wrap, replaced by Daiwa. Snapped top section of B&W John Dean match rod, out of spares, got another one but two spare joints.

An Edgar Sealey Black Arrow bought when I was 14 and carried in a rod bag tied to the cross bar lost 6" from tip, 6" from handle and middle was crushed by bound with glass tape and Araldite by my dad to keep it going - last seen as pea sticks in dad's greenhouse.

Just thought...

I've also cracked a tip off a brand new rod within minutes of unwrapping it when I gave it a waggle on the back garden and it hit the patio table :eek:mg:

And...

I snapped the tip section of a very nice four piece 9'/11' Greys which I used for pike fishing as I was drawing a huge snag into my landing net at a very obscure angle in a fast flow on the river :eek:mg::eek:mg:

I think that's about it :wh
