How many rods do you own and how many actually get used?

Had a recent clear out of rods and have put several up for sale as I'm moving house and have too many and certainly too many that don't get used. Got me thinking, how many rods does the average angler accumulate over time? And how many actually see the bank on a regular basis?

I'm a self certified tackle tart so I'm fully aware how I've ended up with so many, but a few were definitely not needed and definitely bought on a 'what if I need something like this 1 day' basis coupled with a general rule of n+1 where n is the number I currently have.

Also which rods could you not be without?

I'll start....

4 float rods
6 feeder rods
3 barbel rods
4 carp rods
1 Avon rod
1 spinning rod

I'd say 2 float rods, 2 feeder rods and the barbel rods are about the only things that see the light of day on a regular basis

And the 2 rods I couldn't be without are a float rod given to me by my grandad that he fished with when we went together growing up and another float rod that was a 21st bday present - both for sentimental reasons more than anything.

Interested to see if anyone else has a lot of impulse bought rods!

Not currently got many as I've only just took fishing back up, however, here they are:

13ft Drennan series 7 silverfish float rod
13ft Drennan series 7 Tench & specimen float rod
13ft Drennan stick float rod
12ft Drennan 1.25lb Avon rod

Thinking about investing in a Jigging rod but we'll see.

I've cut down on my fishing rods and have sold a number over the last year or two but a quick head count on my float rods is still about 15 or 16, i'm not even gonn'a try and think how many other rods I have!
I use all my rods from time to time, I actually like having a choice to pick from when I go out fishing, same goes for my reels and especially centrepin reels Lol.

I have a feeling Chris may be in the guiness book of records with the highest number of float rods in one persons posession !

There
Current rods, old almost forgotten rods at the back of the locker, travel rods, fly rods, sea rod, poles..... I wouldn't attempt to count them. I might embarrass myself.

Over the last couple of years I've been having a bit of a clear out to allow for new stock and I'm nearly at the stage where I'll be happy with what I've got and they'll last me a few years. My fishing is very varied and I enjoy trying new methods on new waters...so my motto is be prepared!

1x drennan medium feeder
2x drennan super feeder
2 x drennan distance feeder
1 x drennan specialist Avon
2 x 13ft cadence feeder
1 x 14ft cadence feeder
2 x sonik barbel rods
2 x greys xflite barbel rods

2 x lure rods
2 x heavy pike rods
1 x spod rod

1 x 13ft acy ultra
1 x 14ft acy ultra
1 x 13ft acy plus
1 x 14ft acy plus
1 x 15ft acy plus
2 x 17ft acy

And poles...

1 x daiwa whisker xls 16mtr
1 x drennan acy carp
2 x drennan acy 8mtr whips
6 x various sized whips

These are all kept in the house as I class them as current/stock in use....I've not been in the old oral house to sort out yet but hers perhaps another 10 old rods and poles out there

I'm quite streamlined when it comes to rods, I prefer to buy top end stuff that will do a wide range of things and given that I'm not hankering after anything and all of them get used I reckon I've got it just about right.

Three float rods... A light, specimen and long version

Two ultralite Avons

One specimen Avon

One all round feeder

One ultralite bomb rod

Two pike deadbait rods

One 10' spinning rod (makes a great barbel stalker in summer, can't remember the last time I used it for spinning)

I did have a bit of a clear out around this time last year which included a couple of rods which weren't getting used.

There's an outside chance I may add one more rod to my small but well used collection but it will be more a case of completing a set, rather than actcually having a need for it.

Too many, probably 30% have never been used.

How many get used is a good question, thinking about it I probably switch between around 10 active rods although I am counting the multiple ones for things like Carp fishing in that. Of those 10 its a mix of heavy Carp stuff, medium Barbel/chub stuff and lighter Chub/Roach stuff and occasionally some different ones creep in like light spinning rods and so on.

I tend to go through phases where one or two rods becomes favourites for a while then I swap to something else then back again. I have an old Diawa Avon type rod with a nice through action that I used all the time but I noticed just the other day I had not used it for ages so I took it out and it reminded me of all the things I liked about it and so thats started to get used again. I also got 2 pairs of 10 foot Carp rods a while back and I am hooked on them at the moment so the 12 & 13 footers are put on the back shelf until they become favourites again.

One thing that just occured to me is I dont think I have ever sold a rod.

I honestly dread to think how many rods I've got. A lot are retired and dreaming of past glories (like me !) but i am an absolute shocker for buying a rod ( or rods) and hardly ever using them. I somehow manage to aquire anything between 3 and 6 a year. Dont ask me how or why....i just cant help myself. As a non or occasional carper i managed to buy 8 rods last year.....4 are as yet unused. That is Premier League tarting in my book.

I need to have a clear out but the thought of packing up those with a resale value fills me with horror.

I am determined to rationalise and downsize the arsenal this year...not least because both sheds and my corner of Mrs S's " Cave of Wonders"..(the utility room) are full.

I seem to have one of everything (& a couple of somethings) from a 0-5g 6' jig rod to a 4lb t/c catfish rod. I can cover all disciplines & methods. As others have said its good to have a choice for what I fancy doing on the day.

The only rods & have two of are the 11' darent valley's 0.75 t/c and a couple of aging 12' 1.5 t/c fox barbel rods.

Thirty one rods, five poles and two whips. It adds up to less than one a year, for the years I've been fishing. They all get used, but it's on a 40 year cycle. There are only three that were made in the last ten years. Some were mothballed and emerged years later as "classics". There isn't a carp or pike rod amongst them. I like them all; if I didn't they'd have been sold on ( I came up with 23 that I've owned and sold). I sometimes think that's too many rods, but their value to me outweighs their sale value, and I like how a rod connects you to a stage in your fishing life - many are linked to particular waters and places I've lived.

I no longer use or haven’t used them but own
2 x fox warrior carp rods
2 x Wychwood barbel rods
Shakespeare annex xl
Shimano 14ft spliced tip match rod
4 carbon fly rods
1 unused Pezon et Michel splitcane fly rod.
1 Aiken splitcane fly still as the guarantee label tied to it
2 John Wilson rods
Drennan Medium feeder
Various Silstar and Dam rods
Plus some poles and whips
That is just what I remember I have in the tackle shed and not now used.
Add to that reels I never use and other tackle and it’s quite a collection of unused tackle.
What I use is too long to list.

Judging by Peters reply the next question should be....
How many ex wives have you got.:)

If anyone has a straightforward feeder rod 1.5 going let me know!

Oh, deary me.
In the intimidating "To Be Fettled" pile alone are about seventeen...then there are fourteen hanging from the the "regularly/occasionally used" pegs, and another dozen or so seldom-used.

Also a few glass and carbon ones for those days when I have to try and remember how a fixed-spool reel works, and a loft-load of obsolete-yet-usable glass and steel jobs.

I probably ought to get the de-clutterers in.

In my defence, only three rods cost me fifty quid or more, and two of those are carbon, and now probably obsolete. Most were within a fiver of fifteen quid; several, considerably less. As I've only been able to buy rods for the last forty-eight years or so, that's really pretty modest.

Most used, at the moment, are a Dawson's "Medina" and a Youngs of Harrow "Otter" for pike, along with a c*rb*n Browning for spinning;
-a "Harcol" (who?) Nottingham-pattern rod (i.e. 11'-ish, three piece; butt section, whole cane; middle and tip, split cane) - this is my absolute sweetheart, and usually the first out of the bag;
-a no-name ferruleless reed rod, re-whipped and fitted with modern rings, for roach,dace and gudgeon;
-an unidentifiable* beast of a 10' 6" Milbro bottom-fishing rod, for barbel; I once had a 15lb carp on it, and that was definitely its limit! Thank heavens someone was able to help with the landing net, or I'd still be there...
-an Allcocks' Eclipse, ditto;
-a Milbro "Valiant", one step down from the thug mentioned above, for chub, tench and small carp,
-a Milbro "Competitor" ,another step down, for general ponding.

*If anyone has any old Milbro catalogues and can find an ordinary ten-and-a-half foot bottom rod more powerful than the "Valiant", I'd be really grateful to hear about it - the "Thug" is not really an appropriate nickname for such a nice old stick!

I had a massive clear out prior to moving two and a half years ago and am probably down to around less than 20 rods now. As most of my fishing is on flowing water, and trotting accounts for some 80%, much of my usage just comes down to 4 rods – a 12’ Titan2000, and a 14’ Acy Ultra, for trotting - a Harry Chimera 1.25 and one of two Harry Avon Specialists 1.5 (I only use two on a large, low stocked, local gravel pit for tench) for free lining/rolling/lead/feeder use......
