I think a lot depends on the day and the conditions on a river.

On some days I cannot get a bite on a white maggot where a change to a red might bring a fish or two.

I tend to always have red, white and bronze maggots in my bait bag and will ring the changes until I find a colour that gives consistant results.

When whip fishing for bleak or other smller species then I will use pinkies as feed with a large maggot on the hook threaded sort of "worm-style" as then i can take 3 or 4 fish on the same maggot before having to change it.

I used to use a lot of pinkie on those large matches in Denmark or Sweden many years ago as the bream there seemed to love them mixed into my groundbait.
