there was something dark in with them but they did go sweaty and were crawling all around the bait box

These are my squatts which I bought last Friday.

They also came in a dark brown medium which I can’t identify? However they have kept well in my fridge and have seen 2 days out too.
Maybe brickdust has been phased out as this stuff works fine.

Sounds like a lid left on jobby. If you buy squatts in future, when they start to cast, sieve the sand off and keep it,just in case...

Looks suspiciously like brick sand to me.

It certainly isn’t bricksand Rayner, nothing like it. More like the bedding compost you get for geraniums.

It does look similar, I will bow to your conclusion of what's on your bait.
I've never heard of any other medium for squat other than brick sand, perhaps the tackle shop can let you know what it is.
I'd be interested to know.
I understood that other materials made the squatts moist enabling them to float, brick sand was to keep them dry.

I bought some squatts yesterday and asked what the medium they're supplied in was?
They thought it was peat but concluded they weren't sure and would ask the supplier next week.
It is a little damp but doesn't affect them sinking.
