I have several book tokens which I recieved this Christmas however I wanted to get your choices ofbooks to help me choose.

I don't want a simple 'how to do it' book but want a couple of good absorbing readsrecountingfishing tales, days out on the rivers after Barbel, Roach etc. and of course they would preferably need to be on sale today so that I can use my book tokens.

What books would yourecommend buying?

Chris Yates' books are quite goodand absorbing.

"Fish Tales" by Billie Chapman-Pincher is a collection of ghillie related stories, certainly not a "how to do it"!

What ever you choose I hope you enjoy your reading.

Maggie,

Some of the best (in my opinion) descriptive writing is that of Chris Yates.

Try:

The Deepening Pool, Falling In Again and How to Fish, which are all very good to read.

I already have Yates "Falling in again" and his "How to Fish" book but I haven't got "The Deepening Pool" so I will try to see if I can get that book if can.

Ill also have a look at the "Red Letter Days" book Nobby . Who writes it is it Yates?

I'll have a look for the "Fish Tales" book Emmo but I have not heard of Billie Chapman-Pincher.

I was told that a good book that has been recently published is "Walker's Pitch II - Edited by Peter Maskell" My hubby has another book edited by Peter Maskell which contains the best of Walkers articles from an anglingmagazine and I enjoyed reading that.

Thanks again for your help /forum/smilies/smile_smiley.gif

Maggie, it's a compilation by a variety of writers, I think it was illustrated by john searle who had a book published called "A brush with the Avon"

Try anglebooks on the net. oR Google.

Maggie.

I will second Deeping Pool and also add - River Prince by Chris Yates as well.

If you want a bit of barbel history as well - Can of Worms by Jon Berry is a must.

Casting At The Sun by Chris Yates is a must have read.

Although it is primarily about Carp fishing, it is not a how to do it book, so it could be applied to any type of of angling adventures in times gone by.

One of my all time favourites is called Cypry the Carp by Peter Mohan. I recommend it to all the kids at school. Well the ones who fish anyway.

Ron (the hat) Clay is going to do a book too one day hint hint Ron.....

My favourite is In Visible Waters by John Bailey. I have read it several times already and will no doubt do so again.

I think the main problem highlighted by the choice of books suggested is getting to use the book tokens. Most of these books are either only available direct from publishers like Medlar or Little Egret or very specialist dealersas the big bookshops tend to only have the heavily promoted books rather than the small print runs of the more interesting books.

John Aston's book A dream of Jewelled Fishes is worth finding, as is Mike Winter's book (Medlar). Have a look at Medlar's website.

It might be worth asking Coch-y-Bonddu books Coch-y-bondduif they would accept book tokens as they have a very good selection of both in and out of print books including Medlar and Little Egret.

Are you talking about Len Arburys Red Letter Days?.

If so you may be able to get one direct from Len himself.

Can't say I have found a book on fishing, that has made me want to read it from beginning to the End.

All the above are undoubtedly good examples and i have most of them myself, but i would have to say if you only pick one then let it be Casting at the sun, without doubt the best fishing related book out there. IMO/forum/smilies/smile_smiley.gif

'Hooked' by George Melly is very good and entirely what you'd expect from a character like George but centred around his love of fly fishing.

Well I have quite a few that I will look for now thanks,

trev; if Ron (the hat) Clay didwrite a book I would certainly buy one.

Richard; My other half has several books by John Bailey including 'In Visible Waters', 'Fishermans Valley','Roach the Gentle Giants' and one I am currently reading 'The Fishing Detective'. I think he is a great writer.

I think one ofmy favouritebooks is 'Confessions of a Carp Fisher by BB'. The edition that my hubby has is one of the smaller format onesthat hegot given to himinthe mid 70s.

I think I willstart with'Deepening Pool - Chris Yates' and Maybe 'Walker's Pitch II - Edited by Peter Maskell' but if I also see any of the others I will probably end up getting them as well; that should keep me going for quite a while.

Thanks again for your help/forum/smilies/smile_smiley.gif

I have confessions of a Carp Fisher in the same format. Its in my overnighter rucksack and is well read. It fits in one of the side pockets no probs.

If you turn up to one of the socials I will loan you my copy of Cypry the Carp if you promise to give it back.

I keep a copy of BB's 'Confessions', in my overnight rucksack and must have read it about 25 times already.

To my mind there is nothing so good as a cup of cofee and a quick read before turning in for then night when fishing overnight.

For the PC amongst us, I bring my rods in at night and re-cast a couple of hours before dawn, so those hours after fishing and before breakfast are pure 'magic' as far as I am concerned.

You know something Peter?

That sounds just about right to me.
