Where will you go and what Tackle will you use when........

One of Newlands Angling club waters with new matrix margin pole ,after the lumps down the side, also take a feeder rod to try for the big bream.Travel light, ASI box,rod pole landing net,bank sticks small holdall,everything I need in drawers and base of box. And box groundbait tray clipped to side of box for bits.

Another few more venues are the Oxford Canal , Clattercote Res ,and River Thames, The canal and river about 15 minutes from where I live.
Then a couple of trips up north to Dunham Fishery, Lloyd's Meadow ,a couple of waters.

Venues and tackle?

I’m itching to get back onto my local estate lake and try for a few of the Tench that have been recently stocked; using My Drennan Tench float rod and the Shimano Aero 4000FA front drag reel that I bought last season, or on the bottom using my Greys 1.5lb/2lb multi-tip Specialist rod with the lighter tip section.

Ill also be chasing a few of the larger Carp in the estate lake using Shimano 5000 series baitrunners and Greys Carp rods and a bit of surface fishing using my lighter 2lb Tc Drennan Powermesh carp rod with my old Abu Cardinal 55 rear drag reel.

If the river season is open then Ill also be doing a little trotting on my favourite Barbel stream (using my Okuma Sheffield Centrepin reel and my Drennan Tench float rod or my Hardy Marksman 15ft Specialist float rod); and once the light starts to fade I’ll be using my Greys 1.7lb Barbel rod with one of my Shimano 5000 series reels and a link leger.

But if there’s too many others with the same idea then I’ll be searching out some of our more remote upper Gt. Ouse stretches and leave my favourite stream for a bit later in the year.

You could do a two in one trip, I do when I go to Hythe sea fishing with the RM canal across the road. I’m sure you could plot a route to your lake that takes in a canal where you could spend a hour either side of some feeder/float fishing and remember you can fish the canal during the close season, maybe not in 2020 though.

Not arrived yet, turned up at my local depot during the small hours so I guess Monday.

When I lived in Wilmslow, Mike, I liked to fish the Macc canal at Higher Poynton. There's a place - you'll see it on the maps - where you could cross the canal via a footbridge and fish a big wide from the offside bank, away from any boat traffic. The Trent and Mersey is - or certainly was - a very fishy canal, and when I lived in Chester I often fished various stretches between Middlewich and Northwich - about as far for you now as it was for me. I once followed a tip to fish down from a pub connected to one of your clubs - the Bay Malton Hotel by the canal in Altrincham. But that was 30 years ago and I didn't catch much, so I wouldn't rush back.

It’s on the WAA card at Poynton and looks worth a visit. I think it’s called the Wide Hole and is classed as a Stillwater as opposed to a canal..

I do know a few quiet canals but for the biggest part they're just human rat runs!
Dog walkers, cyclists, walkers, groups of **** head kids, all topped off with thousands of captain birdseye clowns!

That's my view of canals, these days, even though I used to love them. But you do get places like wides - a bit like the "flashes" formed by subsidence round your way, and bigger than the usual boat-turning wide - that give you a chance to fish away from the boat channel. There's a cracker on the Trent and Mersey at Whatcroft, called the boat graveyard, where you can fish over to where the boats won't go over your fish.

At last I can seat and open the forum!!!
2 weeks of home schooling, my wife has had to work off hours so that's nearly non stop duties for daddy!

Like everyone, I'm dreaming of that day where we'll be able to go out and forget that hell of bugs, that hell of useless politics, and that hell of stupid people around.

At the moment plans are extensive.... especially while I'm looking through the window and that sun.... that sun............

I am likely to remain unemployed for a long time. I managed to go through a long selection process with a public organisation, and then... they announced that all recruitments were cancelled mg:

So that's 2 options, either we'll stay and I find a job - all Oxford waters waiting!
Or, we will leave the UK permanently - and that's the Meuse waiting!

For now, assuming that will be a new season in UK, then Iam thinking of:
- fly fishing again around the Cotswolds, health allowing (brown trout)
- feeder fishing on the Thames (bream, barbel) - quite a lot of miles!
- Oxford Canal (roach and hopefully bigger species carp, tench)
- fly fishing on local streams (chub)
- feeder on club waters - Abingdon, NAC and others, anything natural enough

Otherwise that will be:
- feeder on the Meuse around Dinant, Namur (barbel, bream, catfish)
- fly and lures on the Lesse (barbel, brown trout)
- fly and lures on the Salm and tributaries in Luxembourg (brown trout)

Only many good moments coming!!!

I do know of a few nice stretches though, which are much quieter than most and are good for float fishing or lure fishing. I only ever lure fish on them but catch a decent amount of perch and pike.

I really couldn't do what PC does, i'd finnish up slapping too many people and if I didn't vacate no doubt plod would turn up wanting to shackle me up!

It's not something I can complain about when doing the oxford canal. Perhaps its not the most prolific UK canal, but the towpath is so narrow and the canal overall as well, that there's no huge concentration of dog walkers etc, with the exception of attractive pubs or moorings where there's easy car parking.
With the typical chap approaching to ask, as a very skilled angler: "You are fishing for trout, right?" And me to answer "oh yes, and salmon as well"
Or, if I'm lucky while pike fishing, the half naked & half drunk girl telling me: "hey, sureman, will you impress me today with that rod" or similar delicate subtle conversation

The only stretch I've noticed a change is between Wolvrcotte and Summertown, the council has renovated the towpath which now is neat and large, obviously this will be a good place for bikes, scooters, commuting cyclers etc and anglers will lose the privileged privacy.... and will need to fish upper in the north. I can't blame cyclers though, as to date the city center has been badly connected to north oxford.

The way things stand right now it will be the local pools near me Much as i like the rivers unless there is a darn miracle somewhere i doubt i will get on the Tern walking now only with crutches hence the not been posting much of late .
I hope to be able to get back to walking unaided in the fullness of time back and leg problems are a menace

But it will be feeder at the local fisheries for a while io can park within feet of the peg ..

The Oxford canal is a farce at the moment. I walked from the city center to Wolvercote. Boaters are trying to stop people by blocking the towpath. Signs have been put up by the council warning them to stop it but they're still putting no access signs up. Walked back down port meadow rather than run the gauntlet of angry looks and muttered insults.

I once caught a zander up past Wolvercote. Right after I did two boats of drunk yobs loudly arguing with each other came past with their throttles on full and churned up the whole canal. Totally spoiled the rest of the day. People who hire boats for a holiday always seem to do this. They can't stear the boats and treat the throttle like an on/off switch. I once watched another bunch navigate past Port Meadow in this manner. They spent about 10 mins up near the lock trying to aim the boat down river alternating between engine on full and engine off.

Was hoping to go after some zander on the canal this spring. Still will if they open it to fishing before the rivers open. Or maybe go to my trout spot with my ultralight.

I'm old enough but don't have a car or mtb. Oxford isn't a great place for cars because you can't drive in the city at all. I'm actually thinking of getting a push bike. I can see how useful it would be for me. Tho I can bus it around quite easily too as my tackle is compact.

Personally i'd forget the public transport and get a decent mtb. You can set off whenever you like, go home whenever you like etc, no waiting for sceduled transport.
A 25/30 mile radious is easy enough on a push rod with tackle and may give you plenty options.
Be warned though, you may find you ditch the fishing gear and start bikin' !
