On rivers, hold the rod, I think there's a bit of a 'jiggle'from my nervous system on stillwaters, if it's that calm you may as well use a swingtip, which when set in rests with the tip just touching the water can be very accurate. On rivers, however, I do think they are self-hooking much of the time, there is no line movement thru the eye of the swivel / bomb etc. The conditions, venue and the species dictate, best not to be too inflexible, I guess!

When touch legering, I like to use a John Roberts "windy rest", which has a deep slot for the rod which does not obstruct the line and helps holdthe rodsteady in the event of savage takes. Useful and cheap.
