I mentioned to our club they were poor at teaching youngsters to find out they have to be CRB checked (which costs) and do the EA coaching badges before they can teach kids - bloody ridiculous

There's a fairly obvious reason why there are now (and always were) less teenagers and twenty-somethings going fishing. It's called sex drugs and rock n'roll.
Once they hit 30 they start to come back to it again. Yes, I know there's computer games etc to compete with, but this is and always has been the main factor.

Torquay .....with my reputation??
When I worked for a housing association doing free repairs for the elderly and handicapped police checks were done before I was granted the post,I did not find it invasive in fact I did not even know they had been done until the second interview ,all I was aware of was being told it was mandatory for the job on the first interview.

Do not despair about youngsters coming into fishing, for the best part of the year I have been involved with first ever Get Hooked on Fishing programme in Scotland at Broom Fishery near Annan. It has been so successful that we now have a Saturday club where the youngsters can come fishing and there is always a volunteers or three on hand to keep an eye on them and give them a helping hand. We are CRB checked but GHOF took care of that. What it has shown us at Broom is that give them taster then an outlet to carry on then they kids will take it up, we have a number of regular kids who will turn up in all weathers to fish. That and the social aspect of giving up a few hours of my time a couple of times a month is very rewarding.

The problem we have is the press (sorry) but all the kids see is big fish so they go out and buy argos starter kits and think the will catch big fish straight away as I witnessed years ago , once I changed there ractics they were catching fish and having fun.

Thats another twist to it, and it's a shame because fishing as the whole thing has so much to offer.

Too true Paul.

I rarely ever see a youngster on my local Hampshire Avon stretches, even the day ticket ones. We used to have a younger member here on FM from my area, Tom I think his name was, but haven't seen him since we changed over to the new FM.

It is a pity in my opinion that those younger anglers who do take to fishing do so only on carp lakes and seemingly never go near a river.

A couple of months ago I did a 2 night session on a lake where to my surprise a lot of youngsters turned up to fish just for the day.

The surprise came when they all set up 3 rods, bivvies etc., and then only fished for about 6 hours before taking the lot down and going home.

One pair, probably about 15-17 years of age had all the latest kit and made 2 trips around the lake to get to their chosen swims (not where I'd have bothered fishing to be honest) with a huge barrow, and then only spent about 5 hours actually fiahing before going home.

Yes, i have seen similar with youngsters Peter.

My lad loves it when we catch the river right and go on one of our "see what we can catch" forays.

13ft float rod, Q'tip rod and a pike rod...............it makes a great change from "specialising"

It's just old fashioned fishing, in fact thats what i'm doing tomorrow.
