What with pole cups being used to place carp baits and rigs in tight areas and now this great idea it wont be long before a pole is a standard part of the specialist carp anglers armoury!

not likely what is this obsession with using poles to catch fish for which they are unsuitable it used to be called a roach pole for a good reason.

i do own a pole though use it regularly to catch some lovely roach especially on the pain in the a@@ days when the winds playing havoc with your float rod

I use me pole a lot on the rivers for placing end tackel right under the snags (Brilliant).

I would not be surprised at all if the Barbel record was caught by somebody using a pole. What would the Barbel police make of that I wonder?

it's a good idea if your only using the pole cup to place the bait in some where you couldn't realistically cast to without leaving end tackle in bushes all day.
but not if your trying to land them using the pole

Poles unsuitable for CARP Jason?......i'm no expert, and have no intention of fishing with a pole, but there are certainly poles available that will land fair sized carp, they are super tough and elasticated with bungee chords!...lol...

Composite materials used for pole making in autoclaves are have an extreemly high level of strenght.

Budgie, Iv'e been fishing several times when i thought to myself "shit, if i had a really long pole i could drop bait on top of em!...." is that what you mean, purely as a baiting device?...

i know you can use a pole with 20's elastics to land quite big carp from the commercial lakes but that's not proper fishing to me. It's a case of just because you can do it doesn't mean you have to. whats next that silly situation of people going for 50lb + fish on the pole. oh yeah i forgot it has already happened.

A pole balanced correctly with the right elastic/power gum etc is capable of landing just about any normal fish in this country and quickley to. Only downside is the distance you can fish at.

The article I was refering to was about using a pole to suspend a floater rig attached to a carp outfit.Carp anglers for a fair few years now have been using poles to "cup" out both free baits and baited rigs (once again attached to a carp out fit) into otherwise inacsessable places. That is what I meant. However I must disagree with Jason about poles themselves not being suitable to catch carp on.Just go down to the nearest commercial where the size of fish has got out of hand and watch how easily and quickly the match boys get upper doubles in.Not every ones cup of tea of course but a perfectly legitimate way of catching carp.

if you read it again jason, the pole is only for holding the bait. the rig then detaches and you play the fish on normal carp gear.

I know lots of people do it but as you say it's not my cup of tea. even though i do own a pole and use it regurlarly.
It's just one of them irrational aversions probably, but to me landing big fish on a pole just does not seem right.

All the pole is used for is to hold the line off the water --You are actually fishing with a carp rod...

i know the carp rod is used to land the fish in that article. thats not what i'm saying the article in question looks a good idea. i was just having a rant against people using poles for big fish fishing in general. it is hard work some time isn't it

looks like everyones finding it hard work!....i think the thread has moved away from the article!
My question to Budgie was..." were YOU suggesting that a pole would be a good addition to a specimen carp anglers tackle for PURELY baiting purposes?..."

No Nick I was just comenting on the fact that lots of Carp anglers are now using poles for several things ie baiting up,placing rigs and now this idea from Paul Ashton.Sorry I mentioned it now! I dont know if these guys have brought the pole specificly for these jobs or just happen to have them anway.Ive never done any of these things despite fishing for big carp and owning a pole.Seen the baiting and placing of rigs with a pole done many times and dam efective it is too.
Just remembered I have also seen carp anglers using poles combined with portable echo sounders.
Jason,I wasnt having a dig at you! Threads by the very nature of discusson do tend to drift on and off subject.I must be the worst one for this!and Im always getting told off it!!!
I dont think you will ever see me targting Barbell or Pike intentionaly with a pole though! Caught my first ever cat on one though.

Maybe you shouldn't have commented if you didn't want people (who in the past have found you to be a world of knowledge on most things angling related.) to question what you meant exactly?..

Wont bother in future!
