Not wanting to hijack another thread and not wanting to start a fresh thread which might run to just a few posts, I thought a new thread to cover these scenarios might be a good idea.

I’ll start. Does anyone know the thickness of the Drennan Specialist compact unhooking mat.? Does anyone have one and what do you think?

If it's the one I have which just says Specialist, it rolls up, it's about 22mm.

I'll bring it next time we meet up. Never used it as it takes a bit to get it flat after it's been rolled up.

I have one too, clips nicely onto my matching rucksack....ooooh what a tart! ? Handy when roving, nothing extra to carry when clipped to the bag on my back and makes a comfy mat to sit on if you go without a chair, use it on the beach too.

As said above it doesn’t roll out flat but roll it up tight the opposite way and it’s sorted. Agreed. Approx 22mm thick.

My GoOutdoors is almost stripped of any fishing stuff.

There's loads of cheaper ones on ebay if go outdoors is having a naked day.
This is more expensive but looks decent...

I think it could be rolled up or packed as in picture.

I have a Rovex mat which looks much like the other run of the mill mats. Whether the Drennan is the same I don't know as I haven't used it but it looks and feels a much better piece of kit. One of the problems with the cheaper ones is when they get older. The foam starts to get saturated which takes a while to dry out and makes them considerably heavier. If it's for roving that might be a problem.

I use a cheap smallish mat for roving. To stop it getting saturated I put it in a couple of heavy duty rubble sacks taped up with gaffer tape.

For roving...I never take a mat. I either unhook the fish in the water or if I want a pic I just find a nice patch of grass.

I’ve think in hot sunny weather, grass is more fish friendly than a baking hot plastic mat.

You should be ashamed of yourselves using these thin mats. Don’t you know that fish especially carp should only be placed on the latest soft duck down padded cradle type mats with an extra pillow for their heads.:)

I decided to buy a memory foam mattress after reading Steve’s post with an electric blanket for those cold winter days.

We have a mattress with a memory foam topper, got it cheap of my m8 who deals in 'em....if you want another Mike gimmi a shout?.
Memory foam is a bad memory for me, to much like the roll of foam we were give to put on top of a metal bed in HMP.
I can remember when I came home how my sprung bed felt like a waterbed!
Imo, you can't beat a well sprung mattress, keep the memory foam for unhooking mats, that's all it's fit for :).

About unhooking mats, I know several people who use pieces of bubble wrap as a unhooking mat, it does look better than any in use and is lighter and cheaper, and easy to clean off.

I don't know why you just don't take a hammock. I just unhook the fish in the landing net then get it back straight away. Unhooking mat pft.

I take your point but the wet net is put on the plastic . I should have said whilst piking which I never start until November the weather up here is never too hot and sunny in sub tropical Lincolshire. The banks of my usual river are often covered in bramble and scrub. Very rarely nice soft grass.

With the local rivers/streams here virtually unfished and completely overgrown (everywhere is a soft spot for unhooking the larger fish) I only sometimes take a mat (like yesterday) but that is mainly to sit on.......
