A simple pole rig? Noob here

Trim to leave around 2' of line between float and pole,

it is 2' from pole tip to float, so if your swim is 3' deep and you are fishing on the bottom that is a 5' length rig you need. I have them made up on 3' , 5 to 6' , and some for deep venues up to 10' lengths, put a couple of No 10 stotz on the line leading to pole tip, this will keep the line tight to the float and makes bites easier to hit.

Here is a pole float size conversion chart,upto 0.50g
pole float size .. weight .. shot equivalent..
3x10 0.10g 2 x No 10
4x10 0.15g 3 x No 9
4x12 0.20g 5 x No 10
4x14 0.40g 6 x No 8
4x16 0.50g 8 x No 8
the above can be mixed between No 8 , 9 , 10 shot/stotz depending on shotting pattern,
anything above 0.50g I think is better using a small olivette and shot/stotz.

Just to confirm, it is 0.1g for every foot of depth fished? In regards to float choice, of course.

Yes, but you don't have to take that as gospel, I have used lighter floats in deep water also heavy floats in the margins to minimize your line and bait being wafted around if you get a couple of decent fish in your swim. I try to fish as light as possible depending on weather conditions etc.

I got on more than fine with 0.3g in around 5ft of water.
