Spooling a reel..adding more line

Will tying a new line to your existing line affect casting ability, providing you are big over or under spooled. If so, what knot would be good to use to tie your current and new line together?

I wouldn't add line unless it was backing line on to a empty spool and then fill it about half way and then spool with my choosen main line

Cheers guys that's really helpful I appreciate it!

I've spoiled a few times and it looks great sitting well on the spool. However, after a few casts, loops and unevenness in the line bobble up. They tend to be deep into the line is there anything I'm doing or could do to prevent this?
