Hi, Chris here, back into fishing after a break of 16 years.

yep! Fishing has certianly changed during those years. Carp, carp , carp and more carp. Don't forget the 'new' carp - barbel! 16 years ago you might have used two rods, one for the float and another you got out when you wanted to do a spot of ledgering.
These days you need a rod for carp (or three), a floodwater barbel rod, asummer level barbel rod, a tench float rod, the list goes on.............. Hope you've managed to save a few bob over the years, you're going to need it to keep up with the Jones's

Think i will stick to my float rod and my ledger rod, noticed when i was picking some new gear that people where going mad over pellet waggler rods and the like, the young lad in the shop did look a bit puzzled when i asked for a float / match rod!!

I came back after a break of about 32 years. My old fibreglass rods still worked, they still caught barbel, and other species, under all river conditions. I HAVE replaced them, but don't think the shiny carbon fibre has upped my catch rate much, if at all. It is my humble opinion that most of the change has been driven by the all encompassing pound in your pocket, and the processes needed to get it into the tackle shop till, and the fishery managers' wallets. True: there are some improvements, but how many of them are strictly necessary is another question. Commercialism has changed angling forever.... especially for those who have let it do so.
The main difference I have found is that anyone, literally anyone, can catch big fish these days.
