Greetings from southeast Louisiana!

This is my first post on this forum.

I live on the water (Tchefuncte River), and used to live on the beach in Mississippi.

My favorite types of fishing are freshwater (especially catfish) and inshore saltwater, but I enjoy just about every type of fishing there is.

Welcome to the forum. Its a bit different here and we do not have the bayous and variety of fish and other critters you have! I am a fan of Dave Robicheaux and Clete Purcell if you know who they are!:)

I cant say i like catfish unless its fried!;)

Sounds great Peter, when you say you live on the water do you mean in a boat ?
I'm imagining you lost your beach home in the floods?

Welcome. It will be good reading about your fishing exploits. Something very different from the UK no doubt.

Hello Peter and Welcome to FishingMagic

We spent 18 months living in Ocean Springs MS before moving up to Nova Scotia . . . . lovely beaches around there and lots of entertainment in Boloxi too . . . . some great restaurants too, including the famous Mary Mahoney's Old French House.

Welcome Peter

I've fished just the once in Louisiana, my uncle and aunt used to have a fishing camp out at Cocodrie, my aunt (who is just fishing crazy!) took me out on a charter boat from the marina there... we bagged a boat limit of bull black and red drum fish, before doing a little bit of lighter fishing by the numerous gas platforms just offshore, throwing a shrimp between the structures. I loved it! Great fun and that one session fed the rest of the family for a few days. Very different to what I do here in the UK, but variety truly is the spice of life.

Would love to hear of any fishing exploits you have in the region, and welcome to fishingmagic!

Thank you for the warm welcome! I am lucky and privileged to have found this forum.

I too prefer my catfish fried, for whatever it's worth.

@Rubio

Thank you for the welcome!

I may just have some exotic (and true) stories to share, as I live on the water and have been inundated with flooding for most of the latter part of the summer and early fall.

With the flooding, came all sorts of creatures normally not seen in the bayou along which I reside, including a couple of alligators, one of which I got to meet up close and personal.

I'll be sure to notify you when I tell my account of that night.

I own a house in Long Beach, MS that backs up to Darwell's restaurant. I've enjoyed Mary Mahoney's on more than one occasion, and my restaurant of choice for dates was the buttet at the Island View Casino, which is only about a mile from my house.

The two characters I referred to feature in the novels by James Lee Burke all based in Louisiana around N'awlins and the delta. I recommend them !

I love N'awlins and have been a few times for the food, culture, music and the ambience! You live in a wonderful part of the world. I hope you will enjoy this forum!:)

My house near the beach is still intact. In fact, it's so high off the ground it survived Katrina.

My house is located on the water along a bayou that connects to the Tchefuncte River.

I took a couple photos to try to show you rather than attempt to paint a visual picture by describing it.

This first photo was taken from my balcony:

The second photo is my pontoon boat in its boat slip:

The third photo is taken from the deck. It shows where the bayou intersects with the main river (the Tchefuncte River).

The fourth image shows part of my backyard, as well as the bayou.

I have a pontoon boat (party barge), a fishing kayak and a canoe. Next up on my list is a center-console bay boat to take fishing inshore saltwater and in brackish water marshes.

I hope this answers your question. If there's anything else you'd like to know about me, my home, the Tchefuncte River or my fishing experiences please feel free to ask.

I can't reiterate enough how grateful I am for the warm reception from you and everyone else who has commented.

My father is from Ireland originally, and while my grandparents were alive, we'd visit every year or close to it.

One of my uncles lives in Great Britain, so I've fished both Ireland and the UK in addition to everyplace you can fish in southeast Louisiana.

We used to use The Grand Hotel Casino in Biloxi as they had a great crèche there for the kids . . . . in fact, truth be told, we used to cheat and leave the kids in the crèche there and nip across the road to Mary Mahoney's for a nice quiet adult dinner . . . . .

The first time we took the kids there t0 enquire they said there was a $4 an hour charge per child . . . . you should have seen the young lady receptionist's face when I took out a cheque book and said:

"well, that is reasonable, so, that's about 720 bucks for the week then?"

My Holy Trinity of Mississippi fine dining was Mary Mahoney's, Darwell's and the buffet at the Island View.

I love the beach, but I love Louisiana culture more. Being able to live riverside in Louisiana is slightly more entertaining for me than being within walking distance of the beach in Mississippi. The main reason is the people and culture in Louisiana are generally speaking friendlier.

During the five years I lived in Mississippi, I was always treated like an "outsider" by the locals who grew up in/around Long Beach / Gulfport / Pass Christian. I never really felt "welcome" even though I had every right to be there.

That said, I still have a Mississippi driver's license, which I can use to renew my fishing license at in-state rates (as opposed to paying $100+ extra if I paid for a fishing license for a Louisiana resident).

Since I get my mail in Louisiana, I can prove residency without a driver's license and pay in-state rates for my fishing license here too.

I make a point of renewing each every year, and will continue to do so as long as Mississippi allows me to. I tried to get a lifetime fishing license but apparently those are only available to children and senior citizens.
