I was present throughout the interview with Derrick Amies as I'd been asked
to take pictures for the magazine concerned, which I happily did.
This was the first time for years that Derrick has agreed to speak to anyone
on record about his fishing.
The fact he did so stems largely from the fact he has known Phil Pearson, who is a respected Norfolk pike angler, for some years.
The reason we perused the photographs and collection of old gear was that
this was part of the brief we had been given by the magazine's editor.
He thought items such as Dennis Pye's rod, which caught a record pike, Jim
Vincent's tackle box and the kind of gear used by the old Broadland masters
would be of interest to his readers.
I don't think there was any question of anyone failing to do anything.
Having been a journalist for 15-odd years, I know that when you ask someone
a question they can either answer it or not.
Phil asked Derrick his views on
several subjects and he declined to answer, which is his prerogative.
What I think did emerge was a glimpse inside the mind of a very private pike
angler, who has achieved considerable success on his own terms, using a
method which is radically different from what you might call the norm.
On the dumbell subject, the quotes in the magazine were clearly presented as an opinion rather than a statement of fact.
If he doesn't want to say where and when he fishes, who are we to argue - we went along and produced an entertaining read with pictures, which was what we were asked to do.
