What about jumping in a barrel of tar?...will also work..or use the german navy's theory that if u did not wash, the natural oils would make u waterproof..lol

Strange you should mention that reverse hygiene theory Rob. Some of my mates appear to subscribe to it.

Adherents are also spared the expense of buying flavours to inject into their deads...

Just roll up your troos and paddle in the margins.

How about a thread on top tips to save money for specialist anglers, or even how to look the part.

eg: Drive around with your headlights on even when it's sunny. Then everyone will think you are Des Taylor.

(Des Taylor drives a Volvo)

Colin, just saw your comment re Falklands. I agree. My mate was in the Marines on Mount ??? First thing he did was dump his gun and take one of the ARgies!!!

Stuart..seems unlikely...since the Argies used the same weapons as us! Only difference was there SLR's (FN 7.62) allowed fully automatic, where as ours only allowed semi auto. (Not a bad thing on a rifle...i can tell u!)

The boots were the real problem!

The problem with small calibre high velocity rounds is that they can be usless in bush warfare. When the bullet hits a leaf or twig it virtually disintergrates. The best round generally is 7.62, the best weapon the good old AK 47.

The problem with 7.62 was that in terrorist situations in civilian areas the bullet went through the target and took out possible innocents.

Yes that it quite correct. In SA they did, I believe develop a round with a flat nose that virtually exploded on contact with the enemy and didnt pass through them.

I have met many guys who fought in the Rhodesia bush war and who were mercenaries in the Congo during my life. They all said the best weapons generally were Russian.

Not a very pleasant subject is it.

Graham, 5.56 did not come in for a good few years after the Falklands..lol. I think we got our first "Rifle 5.56" in 1989/90, before that we were on flintlocks (SLR's). It caused a stire when we were handed it, especially since within the first week we had damaged around 10 of them!

Ron, 5.56 is a bloody good sized round...believe me..I would rather carry 300 rounds of 5.56 than 300 rounds of 7.62!!..lol I have actually managed to place a 7.62 round through a wall and hit a target on the other side!

The problem with 5.56 is stability in flight, ie. over 200 yards + wind can affect the flight, secondly, it does not have the shear "Thump", ie stopping power of a 7.62.

Conversly, a 5.56 does more damage because, when it hits a target, it "tumbles" through the flesh, tearing the "hole" that it makes. This makes it much harder to patch up and stem the flow of blood. Another thing, all standard NATO ammo will fit a 5.56 rifle, even Russian stuff, although stoppages are a problem coz Russian ammo is not always perfectly round!!! Infact, the magazine of an American M1 Carbine fits the british rifle...and better!!

Ron, the AK47 is indeed a formidable weapon, with a very unique "crack" when fired. You can tell incomming AK rounds from other weapons bu the noise. The engineering tolerances on it are soooo bad it means that if sand or ice gets into the workings, it will still operate..lol. The AK74 is pretty damn good also....and liter.

Errrmm..i think I have said too much here...I will have MI6 knocking at the door is I am not careful!

I've fired an AK 47 many times and that "crack" as you say is unmistakable.

We once went on a cormorant shoot and a mate of mine who was a quartermaster sergeant with the SADF brought an AK plus a LMG to tackle the birds. Talk about another 6 day war?

I had to dive behind some rocks about 400 metres away. The whining of the rounds as they ricoched around the rocks is something I will never forget.

Still we got about 30 of the blighters. African white breasted cormorants that is.
