Hi Chaps

I got back into fishing this autumn after 10 years away.

I have started by trying new areas of angling that I didn't try before. I have just started to have ago at pike fishing.

A quick couple of questions:

1. Of all the different lure rods out there, what's the difference / purpose of the different types, eg Lure rods, baitcasting rods, jerkbait rods etc?

2. What type of rod(s) do I need for fishing rubber shads (calcutta) and plugs such the Rapala Super Shad Rap?

I've been using my Prodigy Barbel rod (12ft, 1.75lb) and it seems fine, although a little heavy to hold for a long sesh.

jerk bait rods are specialised h short jobs, stiff as a poker and designed for fishing jerk baits, very big heavy lures.

baitcasting rods, short usually trigger gripped and used with a multiplier, american lure rods, would be fine for the lures you mention.

lure rods tend to be the british design traditional longer rod will also be fine for the lures you mention.

Thanks for that captain, it was just as I thought.

It was mainly the difference in terminology for lure and baitcasting I was a bit confused on.

How do you bring in a large fish on a one hand trigger grip rod? A guy must have to have forearms like popeye!

I prefere a longer handle so that I can use my right testicle as a fulcrum.

i would image that the prodigy barbel rod you own is a very nice bit of kit. but to use it for long periods of time it may get to be a bit of a handfull if you pardon me.

get yourself a proper lure rod , one with a trigger if you have a calcutta reel something about 8 or 9 foot thats rated to cast between 20 and 50 g, a repala ssr tips the scales at 45g so a 50g rod will cope with this easily. by the way ? what calcutta do you own ?

The shads I have are calcuttas.

My reels are Abu and Shimano.

As for rods - having just spent afortune on a couple of barbel rods and new baitrunner, its a case of getting by on what I have for the time being.

Matt you have the right Lures that is a fact and i use a Shimano Beastmaster AX 8Ft med/light 5g-20g Rod with either 10lb or 20lb braid.

I got mine from Billy Clarkes in Sheffieldthey let me have it for £45 but there £50 on the web site but i betif you rang them im sure he would do it for the same.

Hi Cat

Was it Swordsy who got u into the Calcuttas by any chance?

I read your article recently, if I remember correctly you used shads then for the fish u mentioned.

I have some small shads and some larger ones - I need to weigh them as no weight is given.

I use 50lb calcutta braid (another swordsy recommendation). It certainly allows u to turn a log or uproot a tree if you get stuck!

The beast master looks a good rod - I'll have to make do at the moment though£££££

Iknew about the Calcutta range ofshads before i met Swordsey but i know Lee is using them at the moment another top angler who knows the time of day.

Imet Andy Hart at the specialist finals a couple of years ago and he runs Calcutta plus he is into his River Carping so i have kept in touch.

The lad has a passion for his fishing and anything that give the angler the edge thats why i switched from the usual fox and Pro Logic lures and i am so glad i did the results this winter have been unbelievable.

Ow and no need to weigh them i chuck them out for miles on my 5-20g in all sizes from 2"-5" no problem but i have used 20lb braid for the bigger lures and 10lb braidfor the small lures all using a 20lb fine wire trace of course.

Hi Cat

How do you work the shads?

I tried them for the first time sunday. I let the lure touch bottom and then retrieved slowly. Varied the pace from time to time and paused cyclically or occasionally to let the shad drop a touch.

Not sure whether this is a good approach or whether they need a constant retrieve to keep the tail wagging and the gills flapping.

I'm only just getting into using shads as well - any recommendations on colours that have been particularly effective. I'll probably go for a perch pattern as a staple but which of the others?

Any thoughts guys?

Hi Steve

The advice I was givenby Swordsywas to go for something dark, something light and a realistic pattern (like the perch).

I've only had one session so far and caught nowt, even when pike were striking!

Take a look at the Calcutta web site, they're pretty good.

Good look m8.

Aye up lads,

I have had the most success on theBaby Bass imitations and the Opaque Chartreuse Tail shads 4" & 5" sizes.

I fish them all ways i try one across the bottom first nice and slow then i use the sink and draw method then a quicker constant retrieve, its all about finding out how they want it on the day.
