I'm going to have a go at Drop Shot Fishing for Perch, could someone recommend a decent Fixed Spool at reasonable price to match an 8ft 5to12g drop shot rod.

Thanks Bob

That depends on what you call a reasnable price Bob. I's say the shimano stradic ST 2500 FJ will be ideal for the job. There's lots of other cheaper one's out there though.

I've literally just received this little fella today which I bought for drop shotting worms for perch, it's an American import (but bought in the UK) and I intend it strictly for the ultra light rod set up and it feels a really smooth, solid reel with a decent front drag for £30 inc. p&p.

Maximum drag pressure is around 4 1/2lbs, it's a Daiwa too and balances perfectly on the rod...

Edited to add: In the upper price bracket have a look at the Shimano Symetre 500, cracking little reel although I might be getting carried away with the idea that you want a small compact when you might not, target price £75 - £95.

Not sure I'm convinced by these tiny little reels. Any decent front drag f/s reel in a 2500/3000 size would be fine. I have an 8 ft dropshot rod and I use that with a Daiwa Exceler that I already had. Honestly didn't feel the need to buy another reel just for dropshotting.

I probably will eventually though...they do look very cute !

Just don't pick one up Skip, you'll not stop thinking about it until you get one if you do.

I held out for all of four days :D

I picked up one of the Fox Drop Shot reels and it felt okay.

Has any one got any experience with these reels ?

The rod is a Korum twin tip drop shot.

Thanks

Bob

I have had a turn or two of some very dinky little jobs but they are just a tad too "blingy" for me and dont do anything that reels I already had [and dont use much] wouldn't do....so I left them where they were.

I had a 1000 size reel once...seemed like a good idea but I really didn't get on with the narrow spool & associated problems with line bedding in. It was a Shimano too & had a double handle....I think that was the start of my crusade against them.

Provided you avoid the real junk end of the market any half decent f/s reel will do the job....depending on how much hammer its likely to get. Not much in my case.

I thought it might be him Steve as I remember he advertises his reels as being American imports for some reason. He's not the cheapest seller on ebay though. As an example I got a stradic ST 2500 fJ for fifty notes less than he's charging !

Yeah I had a good look around for other listings on the Daiwa before buying but it was the only one at the time in that size, being at the bottom end of the price scale I doubt I would have found much variation though.

I very nearly went for a Symetre as Climax were listing them in the 500 size and they're just up the road from me but conscience got the better of me and I managed to exercise a little restraint and somehow conned myself into thinking I'd actually saved money by shelling out on the cheaper one lol.

Either way it's spooled up and ready to go for a good workout tomorrow, if nothing else I reckon it will scale up a few half pound perch to look good "two's" if I lay it beside them.

Get ready for a five pounder :D

Probably no good for this type of reel but if you are looking for more expensive reels, bait runners and the like, have a look on ebay.de I've had some cracking deals from German sellers even allowing for shipping costs.

I will say from the outset that I have not tried this drop shotting method, but, I have watched hours of videos on the topic.

The first thing that strikes me is this; is there really a need for a specific rod and reel?

Would not an Avon style rod fitted with the quiver tip top section and a 2500 size reel not suffice perfectly?

I would have thought that any decent braid line would also suffice with a few feet of fluorocarbon line attached as the "business end"

Now, I am well aware that my comments above might well mean that I will be asked to return my founder membership card of the Tackle Tarts Anonymous Club, but I really am struggling to see why the need for all this specialist gear . . . . . . . .

Undeterred however, I am going to give my set-up a try this coming week on my local stretch of canal or Hampshire Avon, and see what all this fuss is about.

Funny you should mention that Peter - for the last three years I've happily used an old 10' quiver, 2500 Shimmy filled with 8lb braid to a leader of approximately 1m of flouro - works for me (although the pukka drop rods are obviously somewhat lighter).......................

There's a lot to be said for using tackle you are accustomed to when fishing a new method/style - you know how it works - what that amount of bend and pressure mean and, more importantly, what that tap on the end means! Certainly the 'mini-rods n reels' will be lighter - but how long is it going to take to get used to them - and how many perch will be missed in the mean time?

Still - 'spose it's good for the tackle trade innit? ;):eek:mg:

The lighter the better for me !!

I would still have to go out and buy a Quiver Tip Avon, which I don't need and a 2500 reel ?

So I might as well get a cheapish Drop Shot rod and reel from the start.

If I had those items I would have tried them.
