Hi lads,

Just a few questions I've been mad into pike fishing this summer and I'm still using my Spinning rod 20g-60g And its been good, I'm looking at a JerkBait rod, I've started fishing my local river having ok results a few jacks, Theres some big pike I mean 20lb plus fish This month an Angler caught a 26lb fish.. The lure was massive I believe a Line thru Trout 20cm, I Would like to start fishing Big lures like this ( I've been fishing with Savage Gear lures But didn't want to go over the recommended gram rating on my rod) ..
What Rod would you suggest on a budget ? I was thinking around 110gram rating? and What reel would you suggest ( I'd like to spend around 60ish quid on a reel or more I herd you should spend more on a Decent reel ) I Would like to be casting squirrely burts and other heavy lures..
Have got some Power Pro 60lb braid
Also another Question when you get better with a Baitcaster Can you get some distance ?
Sorry for the long post.

Thanks Fisherbuy

Have you considered a savage gear MPP rod? Reasonable price and been told as far as budget rods go it's worth considering.

As for reels I would look at the Abu Garcia ambassador S 6501. It's a little over budget at £72 but good quality.

Hope that helps.

I bought a Shimano Curado baitcaster about 15 years ago for lure fishing and it was quite easy to use. You don't need much practice, you'll soon be casting further than when using a fixed spool.

You get less tangles if you use braid rather than mono.

I found that with the Curado, it was poor at casting lighter lures, say less than 10 gms. With lighter lures, when casting you can't get enough energy into the lure for it to spin the spool freely. I imagine there may be specialist baitcasters which can cast light lures.
