Sometimes a combination of two rods, one a lure rod, the other a deadbait rod works in winter.

You can't be as mobile as when fishing with just a lure rod, but provided you keep tackle to a minimum you can usually fish half a dozen swims in a day. Have a few casts with a lure rod when you first fish the swim, switch to deadbait and after a while cast around again with the lure rod.

You can get peculiar days in winter when it's bitterly cold and the pike won't touch a deadbait but will occasionally chase a lure.
