Canal Jigging Setup help

I've bought myself an HTO Rockfish revolution Ultralight, a cheap Shimano 1000 Sienna reel, some Gunki 5CM lures, Fox Rage Micro Fry, Mepps spinners, & some 1, 1.5, & 2G jigheads #8 hook.

The canal that I'll be fishing averages about 2 > 3ft deep, is a touch murky & coloured, holds Pike up to about 8ib, lots of silvers, and plenty of Perch.

Can anyone tell me what b/s braid & fluorocarbon leader I should go for, and recommend a good brand?

I've also got some Mustad 15ib wire traces.


I'd also love recommendations on micro lures or grubs that you always use when the going gets tough?

Is there anything I've forgotten?

Size 8 jighead is for tiny lures. These can be great fun but for just trying to catch something I wouldn't go less than 3 gram size 4.

I don't see the point of messing about with flourocarbon if you have a wire trace.

All braid is good, even the cheap stuff. The lighter you can get away with the better it casts. However if you want to be able to pull hard enough to straighten the hook and get the lure back from a snag you would need to step right up. Personally I'm a fan of 6lb braid but I may live to regret that.

Those Siennas are amazing little reels for the money.

I got fed up with braid, I’m using Berkeley Nanofil. Casts very well, no wind knots etc.
I use 8lb fluorocarbon leader, can’t remember the manufacturer but pretty sure it’s fox rage.
Had a fair few pike on it and never been bitten off.
Konger lures have been ok for me and so have Berkeley fire tigers too.
I’ll hands up admit I’m not the best at lure fishing and only do it on occasion for something different to do

Personally I'm a fan of 6lb braid

Can I ask what brand you use? I've just finished my last spool of Drennan Super Specialist Sink Braid in 6lb bs, which they don't make any more. I like it for hooklengths when targeting big roach on waters that also hold carp, but when I've looked for alternatives I can only find 8lb and upwards.

Personally I like Daiwa J-braid the 8 strand version, it behaves itself and for an 8-strand braid it's well priced. On my perch set-up I use the .06mm braid, which is sold as 9lb but in reality is 6lb - that's difference between wet knot strength and linear strength. For jigging the thinner the braid the better

For lures of less than 2" with a single barbless hook I use fluoro. I buy either Drennan or Preston's stuff as it's easily available, I tend to go for something around 6lb but I'm not too fussed as the braid will always break at the knot. If there's loads of small jacks present or I'm using a 2"+ lure or a treble then I use 6lb Ti wire as it's knotable and lasts a lot lot longer than normal wire Cahira Nitinol

Lures and Lure Fishing Tackle - Soft Plastic Lures, Crankbait & Jigheads sells loads of soft plastics and jig heads at sensible prices. If I'm trying to catch perch of any size I like the 1" relax kopyto shads, just pop'em in freshly boiled water for 30 seconds to soften the plastic

I was bitten off twice in a session when using 5lb fluro, after which i started using traces. I'm surprised the upgrade to 8lb makes enough of a difference.

Perhaps I’ve always been lucky ? So far everyone I’ve had has been hooked in the scissors.
When I do use traces I don’t catch anything

Yes if it works for you I wouldn't try to fix it.
