Hi guys.
My son has been, for a while, wanting to get into fishing and so I have bought some cheap gear and we are off to a local fishery this weekend, where the owner has kindly offered to show us the ropes.
I'm looking at spending some quality time with my son too!
I look forward to reading and learning from this forum.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to Fishing Magic. Hope it all goes well. There's a thread in General Fishing, "How did you get on?". Let us know and ask away if there's anything you're not sure about.

Being new to fishing must be like walking onto a mine feild, if there is anything you are struggling to understand. Shout up

Thanks guys. I'll post up when I'm done on Saturday.
I'm pretty lucky really as there are quite a few places to fish locally all within walking distance.

Thanks Keith.
I'm just hoping the lad catches a few. Bought him a whip, so fingers crossed.

A whip is a great way for a beginner to start.

Use barbless hooks to ease unhooking, both for the fish and yourselves. It makes life far easier to release if you hook the landing net mesh, clothing or yourself!

Welcome to FM. I think that is a very good approach to get help from the fishery owner.

Thanks guys.
We went yesterday to a lovely fishery with the bonus of it being on my doorstep.
We had a good time and the boy caught enty for his first time.

Twenty or plenty makes no odds; it sounds like you and your son had an enjoyable and successful day's fishing which is what it's all about. :)

That should of read plenty, 9 in total and he was chuffed. Thanks.

The owners at Bleakhills in Mansfield were brilliant with us as well.

If you are new to fishing use maggots, and feed regularly

if if you see other using bread or sweet corn , pellets ect I'd stick with maggots for the first couple of trips then once you happy try other baits
and as I've said feed little and often to keep fish in your swim

Feed little and often is probably the best tip there is. It's all about building the swim.

Hi and welcome.
Out of my 3 kids, only my little girl is really into fishing, it's a great way to spend time together!
She's now using a 3m whip and - as stated by previous posters - maggots are the king. Can end up pulling out a little fish each cast!
Enjoy!
