    Re: New record Barbel announced

These big fish are often females

So to get success in Sussex you have to suss sex, unlike Wes's ex in Wessex who sucks eggs

    Re: New record Barbel announced

Would many of us honestly claim such a record? I would, records are history and it's more for the fish as a species sometimes, to record weights and progress is history, I'd love the Gudgeon record...

    Re: New record Barbel announced

Thing is Kev there's hotspots around the country where the barbel barely scrape double figures, yet they see a lot of anglers. There's a hypocrisy how sometimes we lament in other threads that...

    Re: New record Barbel announced

I used to think like a lot of the posts on here however is it really that bad that some anglers would want to catch a record fish? We all have challenges and that keeps things fresh especially if you...

    Re: New record Barbel announced

That leads to the question is it right to question the authenticity of the guy without any knowledge of him or the fish?

    Re: New record Barbel announced

Here's a thought - Given the significance of this fish, If the captor had gone all secret regarding the location, with no background just the name of the county, would we have another Gaymire...

    Re: New record Barbel announced

Yes it was pressure but the fish coped, they were pristine which must say something and they seemed to thrive until 'you know what' happened. On the many times I saw Keith Speer he would quite as...

    Re: New record Barbel announced

I suspect it wasn't from a tidal stretch though and with the church the location will get found eventually even if it stays officially as a Sussex river. It's quite likely it's a club water, lets...

    Re: New record Barbel announced

Wow Alan, The Ivel fish weren't pressured that much, they took much more of a hit from those furry critters as you know, so much that the river is a shadow of itself for all species now. Despite the...

    Re: New record Barbel announced

The Ouse, Arun and Adur all hold Barbel, could be any. I hope the guy doesn't get any grief for the recognisable background. Hope it's from a tidal stretch as those rivers push through like beasts,...
  13. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

I use a scrabble dictionary, seems the perfect weight for a spool at home as is pretty redundant as a book :D

Never felt the need to do them on the bank, mind with the old hayfever and now the...
  14. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

I keep some pre tied in my jacket just in case I lose ever lose my spools of home tied on the bank. I think most who tie their own do so because you can't always buy the right hook to the right...
  15. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Good question, for me a spade sits better and the knot is less visible with lighter lines so is much better for shy biting fish with baits like maggot, hemp and small pellet

    I still think eyed...

    Re: Pike Books

This is easily the best Pike book I own, lots of great stories from famous anglers and some fine paintings by Maurice Pledger, there's even a drawing from a not so famous artist in there ;)

    Re: How local is local

Lucky to have a canal within walking distance now, maybe that's payback for those bus and train trips as a kid, even so I'll often drive somewhere that isn't match fished where the fish are pristine...

    Re: Favourite bird?

Wrens are quite impressive lurking in the hedgerow behind your swim kicking out the most disproportionate volume of sound for their size. A dour looking bird that punches above it's weight in attitude

I was thinking that, the amount of times I've cast a float out and a Kinger has come from nowhere and missed it with ease and you think how did it do that?

    Re: Chub and the future

We shouldn't think that loads of chublets are a sign of the river ever coming 'back' Its probably a case of decent recruitment from a decimated population of breeding fish , these chublets are...

    Wingin' it with coarse gear...again

This could be my last catch report for a while so thought i'd put a diary entry from last week on here for anyone who's thinking of sea fishing following Whitty's Dorset post

    Once again we’d...
