    Re: Fluted floats...

It must depend on the flow, I'm sure, but I used one of Richard Cleaver's fluted chubbers with great success on the Hampshire Avon fishing from the punt on the Bridge Pool and I've trotted the upper...

    Re: Fluted floats...

Digging up this old thread from 4 years ago, I have recently discovered that Maj. Smalley didn't after all invent the fluted float.

    Re: Bob Southwell

I've had a bit more information come my way in the interim. Bob's shop was apparently called J W Southwell because he had taken over his father's firm. This CW name causing some of us to think maybe...

Yes indeed, and none of Bob's rods seem to have appeared on the market.

Not that I could have afforded one anyway........

    Re: Bob Southwell

I'm not sure I'd agree about auctions getting better prices. With it's huge audience ( is that the right word? ) it reaches a LOT of people, far more than might attend any auction.

    A Southwell...

    Re: Fluted floats...

Funny things the fluted floats. Peter Drennan once said they were the best trotting float ever......yet his company no longer make them:)

  9. Re: Taking care of floats and hook lengths...

As you may know, I make and sell a few floats and I have found some perfectly good plastic float tubes on eBay.....at a pretty good price:

  10. Re: Wildlife encountered while fishing

There are three events that will stay with me forever, all fishing the same local drain.

One was the not so welcome sight of a small mink not three feet from my face. Another was the sight of a...

    Re: Are we hunters?

That Bushmen tracking has always fascinated me.........you'd have to be pretty good at it for it to work...they often don't see the prey for a day whilst following the spoor.

    Get it wrong, and I'm...

    Re: Are we hunters?

I personally think that almost anything men do within a group of other men taps into our pre-historic selves in some way....be it supporting a football club or match fishing. We all want to be seen...

    Re: Are we hunters?

This is a subject on which I have given much, much thought over the years.

I have come to the conclusion that I am not a hunter, personally.

For me, a day at the bankside can still be a thing...

  17. Re: b james olympic rod restoration

I've found mention of these at 11 foot and 11 foot 4 inches, which was a restored rod and may well have lost a couple of inches.

I'd make your new tip section the same length as the the other two,...
  18. Re: Improving the modern Fixed Spool Reel

Yes, I have some old, old Mitchells and the line lay can be awful, though it turns out there were a number of different spools and bale arms that weren't always compatible with aone another.

  19. Re: Improving the modern Fixed Spool Reel

Those two Mitchells I mentioned are a direct descendent of the 308/408 reels. Sadly they seem only to have been made for a year. Alledgedly having 8 bearings in them, they were an anniversary...
  20. Re: Improving the modern Fixed Spool Reel

Even if you do load your line onto a reel correctly, repeated casting and retieving will twist the line as it is reeled back in. The only cure is to stop it twisting...and no one has managed that...

  23. Re: Preston Innovations hooks to nylon

    Try another rod, perhaps?

Just to see if the Maver just isn't protecting your hooklengths as it might.

I do think a 10 foot rod might struggle to 'do everything' when chasing such large carp.
  24. Re: The Fishing Tackle Industry.......

Er... No, that was me I'm afraid, the year before. After the SPG had run away.

Fred, you are quite correct. It was indeed Kitchener. It was probably the Haig that confused me.:w

    Re: Drennan starlights

Once a 'starlite' is taken from its pack it will deteriorate quite quickly. I had a couple of sessions ruined before I realised this.

Keep them in the foil containers they come in unopened.
