Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

And if anyone is worried about the durability of the electrical tape on the first option, my main feeder rod has had the same (first) wrap like that for at least a dozen years as a “temporary” fix on...

I guess I just about qualify ... having caught my first fish in 1977 (a blenny in a rock pool at Port Holland in Cornwall).

As a match angler I've noticed a few changes since I started out on that...

It would be interesting to see how many of the sceptics posting online are or have been working scientists? Or even scientifically trained? Enough to question the data or conclusions perhaps - or...

Re: What makes a good match angler???

I think the UK match scene has fragmented in the nearly 30 years since the short period when the OP and I fished for the same team. More commercial venues have come to the fore - with a few new...

Re: Bird and animal food as bait

Are the waxworms live or dead?
I was given a tub of live ones 25 years ago and won a match at Barford lakes (nr. Norwich) with those on the hook over maggot feed.
Suspect that they'd make a good...

    Re: All this Rain

Well the old nene was running harder than the tidal Trent in normal conditions. Unfortunately I drew a narrow bit with no slack water. I needed 4g flat float to sit right in 3 feet of water against...

My local river - the upper Warwickshire Avon, has not been fishable on the float since the end of September at weekends. Only two matches have not been cancelled - and both of those were fished on a...

Re: New posts and suitable subjects

Isn't this a lot like "what do you want from a fishing magazine?"

a lot of the articles I see when I (infrquently) buy a magazine are about giving you a recipe or pattern to follow (technique &...

Re: How did you get on?

I did that once - in 1992 on a team practice session on the Cam towpath just below the A14 flyover. It's well over 8ft deep there and I wasn't going to strip off in december .... replacement section...

Re: Reels and the cost your prepared to pay.

The headline was misleading, it was further down the article.

There were also 2 for 1...

always on the facebook page Alan, you don't even need to be a facebook member to read them (discount codes to use on the web page).

Re: Reels and the cost your prepared to pay.

I once bought a couple of cheap reels from Dragon Carp to replace an original aero match that I’d mangled by using it for feeder fishing. The line lay was appalling ... even though they felt usable...

Re: Reels and the cost your prepared to pay.

Of the c. 20 reels that I have for float fishing ... only three were bought new:
    My first Mitchell 440a
    First Abu 501
    Okuma Sheffield.
All the others were second hand from classifieds, friends...

I think my answer about clumsy was actually more in response to other comments - as I know you know about pole fishing.

    True Alan.

The Great Ouse is a small river really, in the stretches that we both know well.
The Ivel in comparison is a brook.

Re: To pole or not to pole

like anything - one can be too obsessive about a method and use it when other options could work better.
Equally - in the end we go fishing to enjoy ourselves, so why not do things that we enjoy?...

  20. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

As a (former) scientist i find the misuse and abuse of the term "theory" mistefying:
    from merriam-webster dictionaries ...

In scientific reasoning, a hypothesis is an assumption made before any...
  21. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

from a matchman's perspective if I get 20% more bites with spade ends then it's well worth the risk of the very occasional loss. And it really is an infintessimally small risk in my experience
  22. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

    Hi Pete,

i'm just more surprised that an angler of your obvious experience in floatfishing hasn't noticed a difference - as it is so marked in my experience (i'd estimate a 10 - 20% difference in...
  23. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

The diagram of the spade end knot in Kevin Ashurst’s “world class match fishing” shows the same as your preference. I lose so many fish and miss bites with it tied that way that I concluded the...
  24. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Pete .... does your line come off the "inside" of the shank? ie. the same side as the hook point? or the other side.

I find with the latter that I lose and bump a lot of fish (if the line has...
  25. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

I haven't bought pre-tied in years ..... but surely it's also way cheaper to tie your own??
