Re: To pole or not to pole

Why anyone woukd cut themselves off from a method that has as many applications and variations as other methods is a mystery to me.

I've used poles since the mid 1970's. The first one, a modified...

    Re: New record Barbel announced

This seems an odd story, on the face of it; is more of the story behind the picture known? It seems inexplicably naive to put out a record barbel pic with a landmark in the background - I can't see...

  4. Re: Anglers, clubs and fishery managers urged to use review to get cormorants on the

With just a couple of days left, the lack of comment on this is surprising. Has anyone taken the time to complete the survey?
  5. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Thanks for that! I'm impressed that you're getting to the bottom of these knots. I'm completely happy with the Matchman knot - but I rarely go below a size 20, and I can often get an 18 to work...

Re: Are you tempted I was.

I recently had a barbel rod made up to match my favourite Harrison. It was built by a former Harrison employee, who looked at the pic of my 2004 rod and said "Yeah, I built that. Would you like me to...
  7. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

I may just have a blind spot on this, but I bought Kevin's book when it came out, and 40 years or so later I still can't fathom those hook-tying instructions. If you take B and try to take it round...
  8. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

What leads you to say it's the best knot by far? How could it be shown to be better than the other two to anglers who've found either of those two entirely reliable? I've used the matchman for...
  9. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

I didn't know that! I was reminded of the song when I bumped into this recently in one of my intermittent efforts to teach myself. No other human should ever have to listen, but I enjoy it, though...
  10. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

There's always Catfish Blues. Naturally, there's a Muddy Waters version, too.

  11. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

I'm impressed, too. I can tie spades by hand, but only the odd one these days in a warm room in good light! For eyed hooks, I've ended up preferring a grinner to a tucked half-blood - it might be just...
  12. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

    Roget was British, surely?:)
  13. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Have you tried a thesaurus? That can be quite suitable, apposite, appropriate, fitting.......
  14. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Absolutely. For that reason, I'd much rather tie hooks on on the bank. Doing it at a desk or bench involves the rigmarole of putting weights on the spool or clamping it somehow, and the longer line...
  15. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

But could you do it on a wet Wednesday night in Stoke? No reason why you won't be tying them on the bank in a bit. And come to think of it, even Stoke can't do it on a wet etc these days.

    I...
  16. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

That looks pretty decent, Mike. As people have said, it soon becomes second nature. Beware of that spade though - it will have your arm off, if you're not struck by lightning first :)
  17. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

It is? Then how have I and countless others used spade ends without problem for decades? Why so reluctant to accept what people tell you and what is so obviously, looking at the hooks sold, their...
  18. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

I've never seen that before. Do you have to seek out hooks with large eyes? I've sometimes found it hard to get the line through twice.
  19. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Does it matter that spade ends are attached via a whipping knot, which may ( I'm just preparing to be attacked by angry engineers who'll tell me I'm abusing stress, strain, force etc) spread the...
  20. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

No problem - linguists detect the implied smiley. :)

Very nice! A sophisticated version of Have you got the time?/Yes or Where are you going?/Out
  22. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Indeed, and I know engineers who freak out if you say, for example, breaking strain when it should be breaking stress.

  23. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Regarding spade end hooks, it's hard to know what to say if you explain that you and millions of others have been using them life-long without any line problem, and someone who doesn't use them...
  24. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

But not through the eye! My comment is about the "spades are inferior" branch of the thread, not the "which side of the spade" strand.
  25. Re: Tying spade end hooks and hooklengths,or the inability to.

Reading this thread, has made me wonder what those angling nearly-men - Ivan Marks, Kevin Ashurst, Dave Harrell, Alan Scothorne et al - could have achieved if only they'd been smart enough to use the...
