    Re: Shakespeare reels.

I bought a cheapo Beta RD reel a few years back, and although it wasn't the smoothest reel, it did the job and was (is) reliable.

I also bought a pair of Omni RD reels one of which was for a...

Re: Why a Pike close season?

On my local river there is hardly ever anyone fishing duing the open season, so having no closed season would make little difference anyway.

It is a shame that just as the weather starts to...

Re: Small water Carp rods ?

I find spinning rods ideal for small waters and for stalking.

Anywhere between 7 foot and 10 foot should do the trick, and you get more for you money compared to a carp "Stalking" rod.

    A 20-60g...

    Re: carp fishing rod

I have a few carp rods, and the 3lb one is like a broom handle in comparison to the lighter ones.

Most of my fishing for carp is done on smaller pools, so as above it only really gets used for...

Re: Favourite Fishing rods and why ?.

I would agree with this, although I do find it a touch light for bigger fish.

But if I had to make do with just the one fishing rod it is the one I would choose..

    Mine is the earlier Ryobi...

    Re: Reel maintanance?

I have oiled my Sea fishing fixed spool with 3 in 1 before now with no issues. the line roller was the bit which needed it most.

Never really felt the need to oil the freshwater ones.

    Re: Barbel on bread.

I think you would struggle if the river was full of Minnows.

I tend to use sweetcorn for this reason.

    Re: Shakespeare Agility Barbel

Thanks for that, I will take a look at the Diawa as well.

I do like Diawa tackle as a rule, but some of the Shakey stuff I have had recently (reels) has been a bit dodgy in terms of quality...

I think my local shop charges £2.85 per pint.

They are normally pretty good, but to be honest I have taken old and sweaty maggots fishing before and although they are less pleasant to use they...

I did manage to land a 11 1/2 pounder on my JW Avon quiver with the quiver top section fitted. It did handle the fish pretty well especially considering I was on 6lb line straight through to a size...

Thanks, I haven't heard any bad about it either and the Amazon reviews seem positive.

I will most likely take the plunge, it gives me an excuse to get out over xmas as well. :)

    Shakespeare Agility Barbel

I have just received a £50 Amazon voucher as a belated birthday gift and was thinking of treating myself to a Shakespeare Agility Barbel rod like this one.

Have you had a look on ebay to see if you can find similar?

That should give you a rough guide to the price.

    Re: Size really does matter

In my opinion Pike are more likely to take smaller baits.

The reason being is that if they are not really hungry they are less likely to turn their noses up at a small snack than they are...

    Re: ''No one's laughing now''

I enjoy a bit of lure fishing, but I always seem to catch more pike on sink-draw dead baits.

Whether that is because I am not much good or whether the fish around here prefer deads who knows?

If you pick the ones which are not quite fully ripe they are harder and stay on the hook better.

    Re: Which line?

In lighter strains I usually use Drennan float fish or Specimen plus.

In heavier strains I am a convert to NGT Camou. It is cheap, lasts a long time and is very thin for its breaking strain.
