Re: How did you get on?

I can't fish for the next two days, so I had to make the most of today. As I had the shortened rod to try, I had to give the beck its first go in a couple of years. I don't fish it often as It's fly...

    Re: Telescopic poles and rods

Though I'm aware that it's born out of prejudice, I'd avoid a telescopic, or put in, rod or pole like the plague.

For me, rods should have either be overslide or spigot jointed. Put in rod joints...

Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

It isn't me that's particularly concerned. However, even plastic, or the graphite composite that I believe it is, is not particularly desirable on painted or anodized reel feet. Not too many reels...

Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

With the idea of a picture painting a thousand words, I like to hold rods fitted with centrepins like this.

Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

Not that model, but there are various different Daiwa models (Tournaments, Airity, Air AGS etc) that have featured the Tournament reel seat. I like them well enough when used with a fixed spool reel....
  6. Re: Recommendations for a 13ft stick float rod for roach fishing.

I think it's a screw up seat, so I doubt it'll be for me. However, I believe that the Silverlites are purely tip rods, so I won't be finding out for myself any time soon.

Re: Bog ordinary rear rod rest head

The head rotates on the threaded brass insert. Locking nuts and O rings make no difference at all. You'd still have to grip the actual head with pliers or molegrips to tighten or loosen them. The...

Re: Bog ordinary rear rod rest head

    Holy necro-thread, Batman.

Skip, though I have continued to use it, my Gardner rear rest started to get on my wick. I could never screw it in quite as tightly as I'd like (without taking molegrips...

Re: Replacing reel bands with a seat

No need for extra length as a counterbalance on a short rod. It's just a smidge longer than my forearm.

  11. Re: Recommendations for a 13ft stick float rod for roach fishing.

Here's a pictorial demonstration of why I love the Browning Sphere (Fuji really) reel seat, especially for use with a centrepin.

Re: Replacing reel bands with a seat

Here's the project rod that I mentioned earlier in the thread. What was thirteen foot is now 11' 1". The extra inch was to allow the Daiwa Union Flag logo to remain intact, even though it's hidden...

Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

Look out for a Tom Pickering Matchwinner-S, they used a six inch section of that composite cork stuff. Much less chance of that compressing.

Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

I'm no big fan of sliding bands, but I've never had a reel fall off with Roberts/Daiwa/Fuji, plastic/graphite bands on a cork handle. I've never had an issue with cork compressing quite so much as it...

Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

The prime reason I've never bought an Asaki blank Carbonactive or a Hardy Marksman. I've never been sure why anyone thought metal reel seats were a good idea. They do look quite nice though.

Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

Neoprene can often have enough elasticity for a butt flare (and diameter changes at the reel seat) to be of little consequence. The snag would be finding, repurposing, or making such neoprene sleeves.

Re: Why didn’t I think of this before!

The only minor snag is that you'll need to cut off the shrink wrap to change/remove the reel.
If I felt the need, I might be looking for some neoprene sleeves. They'd have to be sized just right but...

  20. Re: Daiwa Amorphous Tournamnet Match 13s(ATM13S)

These are the rods I believe that the OP is talking about. However, I also suspect that the full codes should be ATM 132W (13'2" Waggler) and ATM 132S (13'2" Stick)
  21. Re: Daiwa Amorphous Tournamnet Match 13s(ATM13S)

As far as I'm concerned they are largely indistinguishable other than the length. When it comes to action and power, you'd struggle to split them. You can add the 15' Ultra to that mix too. I don't...

Re: Replacing reel bands with a seat

I'm no expert, but I did do a bit of shot in the dark DIY last month. I spent quite some time raking through Fuji catalogues and rod building component shop websites. As mine was a rod shortening...
  23. Re: Recommendations for a 13ft stick float rod for roach fishing.

Yes, I invariably use longer rods more. Just the way my own style of fishing has developed over the years.
  24. Re: Recommendations for a 13ft stick float rod for roach fishing.

No nothing like the Allerton. If they were no use with the grayling, they simply wouldn't be a favourite of mine. As it's the best part of my river fishing, a rod that's poor with grayling is of...
  25. Re: Recommendations for a 13ft stick float rod for roach fishing.

There's no argument from me, both points put me off initially. However, there are still a few points worth noting. The longer Sphere is 15' 6" not the 15' of the Acolyte, unless it's counterweighted,...
