    Re: Chub Catching Methods

Makes sense because it would keep the fish hanging around exactly where you want them. Must get round to trying this one day, my local stretch would be ideal.

Welcome to FM by the way.

Re: How did you get on?

Haha, i genuinely did change from the float to a tiny bomb (couldn't be bothered with the number 8 shot fiddlance necessary to retackle after my Drennan Antenna went up a tree)

Aye. I don't think the bomb was viable because they dug a hole, put it in and blew it up and it didn't make a crater.

If you had fish hit your lure then you're doing something right. You now have a lure pattern that you know works, stick at it.

Re: How did you get on?

A session scratching a few small rudd and a roach from a part of the pond that wasn't iced over. A loud splash as a kingfisher on the far bank took the plunge through the icy surface. Some local...

    Re: Chub Catching Methods

Always nice to throw a few crusts in during the last weeks of the close season. I like to choose one and pretend it's my hookbait.

Not the most reliable for me but one of the most fun methods is floating crust in the summer.

Worm on a size 10 to 4 depending on the size of the bait, 5lb hooklength (or straight through) and one of these tiny things held on the line with a piece of skewer.

Re: Floating baits on a feeder rig

A lot of people swear by stinky cheese for chub. Maybe try that instead of a buoyant bait if you think they aren't noticing it in the coloured water.

    Re: How local is local

Everywhere is so shallow and/or weedy, despite the rains. Chub averaging 1.5 - 2lbs are still plentiful, lots more perch these days (average 12oz), not heard of any decent sized pike for ages. Dace...

Re: Double hook drop shot rig

If you're not fussed about varying the depth of the lure you could just replace the dropshot weight with a jighead and stick half a lobworm on that.

Re: Drop shotting - am I missing something?

Perch of all sizes are absolute sods for swallowing the hook, dropshotting would seem to be a way of avoiding this almost completely.
