Had an hour to spare today so spent an hour on the local cut with my new Shimano Nexave 8' spinning rod.
Coupled with my Shimano Super Aero GTM 4000m I played with a couple of small lures first. Not a sniff.
Clipped on a Shakespeare spinner with a red fluffy bit on the treble. First few casts got nothing, next cast retrieved close by the towpath produced a cracking (and very angry) perch. Didn't exactly test the rod to the limit but I would confidently target medium pike with the rod.
